Camels plod along the wide, ivory sands of Diani, a palm-fringed beach on the Kenyan coast. Time moves slowly here beneath the yolk-orange sun, where your only obligation is to swing in a shaded hammock and occasionally wade into the warm water. Gentle waves lap the shore, protected by a distant reef that acts as a coral garden home to kaleidoscopic marine life. If you don’t feel like sitting still though, head to nearby Mombasa. Settlers have converged here from across the ocean since the 12^th century, resulting in the old town’s tangle of Hindu temples and dome-topped mosques, its narrow lanes leading to the UNESCO relic, Fort Jesus.

From here, you can peer along the coast towards Diani. While snorkellers bob on the surface of this watery wonderland, the multi-coloured sails of dhow sailboats ride the waves and divers venture further into the Indian Ocean to explore eerie shipwrecks. Between November and February, colossal migratory whale sharks join them, gliding silently through the water. More natural wonders await in Diani’s indigenous forests; let a member of the Digos community lead you through the sacred Kaya Kinodo Forest, teaching you about their ancient culture and traditions as you wander.

Mohamed grew up at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, where his father was a game ranger, so conservation is in his blood. Having worked with the Elewana Collection for eight years, the last four of those at Loisaba, he offers expert insight on animal behaviour and has an engaging sense of humour that guests love.

Big cat writers, photographers and filmmakers

Jonathan and Angela Scott are award-winning wildlife photographers, TV presenters, authors and conservationists. The couple live in Nairobi and have a permanent base at Governors’ Camp in the Maasai Mara, where they’ve been documenting the lives of the area’s lions, leopards and cheetahs for over 40 years. Jonathan and Angela famously filmed the BBC’s Big Cat Diaries in the Maasai Mara for 12 years and have continued this legacy with Big Cat Tales on Animal Planet.
