Experience a unique and exclusive wildlife encounter on one of our gorilla trekking safaris in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Comprised of a lush blanket of thick, green rainforest and five of the stunning Virunga volcanoes, this spectacular National Park is home to around 480 habituated mountain gorillas, about half the world’s entire population of the critically endangered primate.
On the Rwandan slopes of the Virungas, there are now recorded to be ten families of mountain gorillas, ranging in size from nine to 37 members. In groups of eight you’ll trek this dramatic natural setting accompanied only by an expert guide and tracker. Discovering one of these families in their natural habitats is a magical sight – observing a tiny baby gorilla or a huge Silverback at such close proximity can be incredibly moving. As some groups of gorillas settle higher up the mountainsides, the treks often range between one and six hours before your first encounter. Some of the trekking can therefore be steep and arduous, but we promise that your perseverance will be well rewarded – this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The conservation of these highly endangered primates is critical, so the park takes certain precautions to guarantee their protection. To ensure as little disruption to the gorillas as possible, viewing times are limited to an hour and only one visit to each gorilla family is allowed per day. Permits are required to visit the park at approx. US$1500 per person per trek and only a limited number are available each day to ensure an exclusive and responsible experience. Although pricey (and non-refundable), it is rewarding to know that the majority of this cost is used in the maintenance of the park and the protection of its wildlife. We include the cost of these permits in the price of our itineraries.
