On this incredibly scenic ‘Peruvian Highlands’ itinerary you’ll journey from Cuzco, the former capital of the Inca Empire, to beautiful Lake Titicaca on the shores of Puno, and on to the UNESCO-listed ‘White City’ of Arequipa.
Traverse the Altiplano and admire spectacular scenery along the way as rolling plains, snow-capped mountains and endless horizons unfold before you. Stop off to explore Incan ruins and ancient cave paintings; and visit the famous Uros Floating Islands on Lake Titicaca.
Belmond Andean Explorer (Peruvian Highlands): 2 nights (Cuzco - Puno - Arequipa)
Day 1: Cusco to Puno Your rail adventure begins with an 11am departure from Cusco to Puno which lies on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Journey south and enjoy lunch on board as you soak up the scenery. Stop en route to visit the Incan archaeological site of Raqchi which is dominated by the ruins of the Temple of Wiracocha, an impressive 15th-Century structure that was built in honour of the creator god Wiracocha. Continue on your journey and have your camera ready to capture the incredible sunset over the La Raya Mountain range before dinner is served on board. This evening, arrive at Titicaca station. L, D.
Day 2: Puno to Arequipa Admire the sunrise at Lake Titicaca before breakfast is served on board. Ride a traditional boat across the lake to the remarkable Uros Floating Islands which are made from totura reeds and expand to support the growing Uros community. You'll also visit Taquile Island to experience an ancient culture that dates back to pre-Incan times. The islanders uphold the traditions and beliefs of their ancestors and they are renowned for their colourful outfits and textiles.
Whilst on the island you'll stop for lunch at Collata Beach and get to see a cultural display including a dance performance and a demonstration from a local artisan. Return to the train station in time for tea before departing to the ‘White City’ of Arequipa which is renowned for its white volcanic rock buildings. Enjoy cocktails before dinner is served on board. Day 3: Arequipa Breakfast is served on board as you continue to the Sumbay Caves, home to the rock art of the first humans to live in the Peruvian highlands. You will have the opportunity to disembark at Km93 if you wish to extend your journey to Colca Canyon, which is a 1½-hour drive away, for a one or two-night stay (this can be booked independently at extra cost). Enjoy a light lunch on board before arriving in Arequipa. You could choose to extend your stay here or enjoy panoramic views of the city during your transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
