End of season weary hotel.
We were meeting friends from Switzerland here and then going on to one of the islands for two nights. I quite understand that personnel can be worn out at the end of season and as the hotel was due to close a couple of days after we left they were already thinking of holidays but a smile and a friendly word doesn't take too much energy. Reception staff managed to be welcoming and friendly so how come the restaurant waiters were so morose, one of the waiters managed to serve an entire dinner without speaking to us. The dinner was very disappointing, we had chicken in breadcrumbs which was inedible and even though we had eaten nearly nothing we were never asked if everything was OK. We ate out the second night and returned to the hotel around 10.30, it was raining and we were told that we couldn't use the lift because of the rain, after we explained that we were on the fourth floor and I was unable to climb the stairs they managed to operate it. Maybe at the start of the season it would have been a better experience but definitely not the place to stay in October.
Great hotel close to everything
I organised for 16 couples to stay here for my 60th for 4 nights. This places oozes old time charm without huge prices...We also organised drinks and snacks on the terrazzo...it was wonderful..A big thank ypu to Giovanna for organising it all.
Fifth Time here
Again we holidayed in Stresa at the Royal Hotel which is situated approximately 20 minutes from the town centre. As before we received a very warm welcome from all, which made us immediately feel at home. We again got a lovely room on the 3rd floor with side-lake views, and beyond that to the Alps. We got the sun most of the afternoon. As previously, the room and the en-suite were spotless. The meals were up to the usual high standard, and there were very good options o the dinner menu to suit all tastes. As usual, the staff were always very pleasant and helpful. You don't require an information office, as most of the reception staff can answer any query, and can also supply timetables for buses, trains & the ferries. There was a very good choice, with scrambled and boiled eggs, plus bacon on top of the normal continental options. There is a large lounge area where one can sit in very comfortable chairs to have a drink or coffee after dinner, or at any time. Outside on the terrace there is a smoking area. The Royal Hotel is family run and it is so pleasant to see members of the family having meals in the dining-room along with the residents. They are always walking round the hotel and are always willing to speak to the visitors and hear all the comments. There is a large area for car parking with an overflow available across the road. We met friends who were staying at a 4* hotel in the area, and in comparison, the Royal was much superior, and they reckon theirs should have been a 1*. Again we couldn't fault anything, and are looking forward to returning in 2020..
Just returned from a perfect week at the royal stresa. Staff here are wonderful - polite, smart and always happy to help in anyway. Our room (414) was spacious , always clean and had fantastic views of cable car and beautiful lake. Worth paying extra to be at back of hotel. Lovely walk lakeside (20mins) into Stresa where there are many great restaurants (La Stresa the best we found) . Easy to get tickets for excursions from information office(on main car park) or booking agent just before fountains on lakeside. We only had breakfast at hotel which was plentiful and in comfortable setting overlooking garden. This family run hotel really deserves more than 3 stars - thanks to everyone for making our holiday so perfect.
Splendid hotel in quiet location
This hotel is situated just off the lake by Isola Bella and Pescatori island, with the cable car entrance down the lane. A family run hotel, with good rooms, excellent service, very clean and comfortable ( with one small gripe - don't the Italians need such things as drawers or sensible-sized wardrobes which can accommodate a coat hanger without having to have all hanging at an angle so the doors can close?) Food is excellent with a good choice every morning for breakfast and a four course evening meal - salad bar first then four courses to follow. Fabulous views over the lake - a rooftop garden which misses a trick by only having loungers and a few tables and chairs but no bar up there. The swimming pool was a tad cold! The walk into town by the lake side is lovely. This takes as long as it takes- a slow amble or a brisk walk. There is a bus back every hour. Up to Mottorone by the handy cable car costs 20 euros and well worth it for the spectacular views. And if you feel the need to visit the isles of Isola Bella or Pescatori the water-taxis are nearby too. There is a very nice cafe/restaurant hanging over the lake edge called Lidro Volante after the flying boat - coffee is very nice as is an aperitif or two! By night the views are magical. Can thoroughly recommend this hotel but remember to take your travel kettle and there is no iron in the room either.
