As a returning guest to Domes Miramare, I had high expectations. Unfortunately these weren't met, and the drop in standards were clear before I'd even arrived. Arranging an airport taxi with the reception prior to my trip was a challenge and resulted in me arranging my own transfer privately. On arrival to the hotel, it was clear this wasn't going to the experience I remembered it being the first time. The hotel is beautiful and i can't fault it aesthetically. My first night was in a jacuzzi sea view suite and for the remainder pool and jacuzzi sea view suite. The latter was absolutely fantatsic and I'd return for those views. The food in the Japanese restaurant was amazing. I'd like to mention George, one of the waiters. He went above and beyond and was a true representation of the Domes service I remember. The team looking after HLS in 2019 set the bar really high and the experience felt a lot more personalised. This time round i didnt feel the focus was right. It's fair to say after some complaints the staff did try their best to accommodate my requests but the fact I had to complain in the first place left a bad impression on me. Whilst I appreciate things don't always stay the same, I'd hope they get better rather than go backwards. This was what I felt to be the case at Domes Miramare this time round.
Overall we had a lovely holiday. The location overlooking the Ionian Sea was quite stunning with the mountains of Albania in the background. Breakfast (buffet style) was of very good quality with a wide choice of food. Food was quickly replenished at busy times. Service at the table was very attentive. We did not eat in the hotel restaurant for dinner so cannot comment on this. We were aware they did not offer bar snacks but a very limited menu around the pool bar. We were upgraded to the Pavilion area where the accommodation is private detached villas. Fortunately, we were allocated one of the best villas (111) which had a very spacious, airy bedroom and bathroom with shower and bath. A large decked terrace with our own jacuzzi. This area is very quiet and private. I would thoroughly recommend the spa package of 3 days. The staff were very competent and efficient. It proved to be very relaxing massages, tailored to your own requirements. The Spa is located across the road in a very new building which opened a few days ago. A tip, be sure to use the lovely swimming pool located in the new part of the hotel it is much less crowded and affords lovely views of the sea. A Greek Taverna which commands a mention is the 'Village Taverna' located in Moraitika which is about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. Food was superb and very inexpensive. The owner and his family were so friendly and welcoming. Make sure the hotel books a table for you as it gets very busy every day. A visit to Old Corfu Town is a must with something for everyone. Historically interesting, delightful individual shops, high end and inexpensive. Not tacky at all. Take the hotel's boat about 30 mins and return by taxi, this works well. Taxi is 45 euros return approx. The hotel boat has to be booked well in advance we discovered and took a private speedboat instead. The Concierge staff were particularly helpful to us and catered well to our needs. Worth a mention especially are Maya and Christiana who went out of their way to accommodate our needs, in particular the boat trips. Their professionalism was exemplary. Do make time to visit Notos Beach, a very pretty cove and the Panorama Taverna. Unless you particularly like the blistering heat the best time to visit Corfu is mid September. Be aware that not all taxi drivers take card so it is best to always carry euros. Despite the hotel assuring us that a particular taxi driver did take card.
Location and most staff are super but a few minor niggles.
The positives are: The superb location where you never tire of looking over the Ionian Sea towards the mainland. Overall, the hotel staff are excellent. The reception and concierge teams never failed to assist us. They were incredibly efficient and well informed. The cleaning staff were excellent and the outside staff were helpful, courteous and polite. We appreciated the iced water while on the beach area. We especially appreciated Barbara, who offers Pilates and yoga sessions. Thank you! The sun beds were good but there were times when the old habit of residents reserving them and not using them for hours on end was an occasional problem. Things which could have been better: Hope these are constructive comments: We chose a garden room and it was good although the patio space was hardly 5 star. The shower was adequate but below the standard we have had in 4 star hotels. Furniture in our room and the oversized lamps and other stuff gave it a cluttered feel. The wardrobe and drawer space was just adequate. The breakfast offered a broad choice so everyone is catered for. However I like a simple protein start so chose the freshly cooked omelette which was okay. The downside for me was that all the other cooked options (eggs, bacon, mushrooms etc) were pretty much cold. The plates were cold. The coffee was average, usually not hot and served in such small quantities you had to keep asking for top ups. This is below 5 star standard in my opinion. The staffing level at breakfast never seemed to be adequate for a good level of prompt service. While we were there the female concierge staff were given new uniforms and I was surprised at the dowdy design. The bunched up blue dress is seriously unflattering. Hope the management have a change of mind on that. Finally: We chose bed & breakfast which meant we tried all the local tavernas and fine dining restaurants in the area. In several cases we returned especially to the nearby Taverna ‘Bella Vista’ & Taverna ‘The Village’. Well worth the short uphill walk and warmly recommended. Overall a really lovely 2 week holiday despite the few minor niggles. I would go back.
The best hotel i ever been
The best hotel i ever been in. The crew are kind and helpful. The spa of the hotel and the help desk inside it will do anything to enjoy your stay there. If i could stay at this place forever it would be wonderful. i could give them 100 stars for the most pleasant hotel.
Stunning with a few growing pains
We’d booked a beautiful room, almost a house, on the left side of the resort. It’s the Haute Living part. The room was gorgeous, spacious, clean, and we were welcomed into the room with bubbly and snacks. I cannot stress enough how beautiful the room was. Big bedroom, big bathroom, big living room, garden with pool, jacuzzi and sitting area, and just a few steps to the sea. Lots of storage room, all furniture high quality. There is only one restaurant, but the quality is really good and the staff is very nice. My favourite members of staff though were the two house cats. The breakfast menu is impressive, and both breakfast and dinner offer many options for vegetarians. The lovely women at HL make sure you can take amazing trips on the island, with good tips on excellent restaurants. So why only 4/5? The Haute Living part is a bit puzzling at first. You can have lovely drinks, but are not allowed to take them outside of the HL lounge. Seems a bit weird to have a lovely day in your garden at the beach, at your pool, but you cannot take drinks, and nobody comes by to offer you some. You can go to the city and buy your own, but honestly, that’s not why we pay for a luxurious resort. We just love ordering beautiful cocktails when relaxing. Then the biggest annoyance: they refill your fridge. You are allowed to have one drink of each, when it gets refilled you pay. Okay, but:there is no way, no way to keep track. We got an outrageous bill when we checked out. Luckily I noticed quite a few drinks on the bill we absolutely did not drink, and they were taken off the bill. It seems petty, but for me that’s a reason to think twice about going back. Mini-fridge usage should be transparant. It’s all about mutual respect. Lastly I would encourage management to participate either actively or monetary in the trap neuter release programs for stray cats. The tourists bring in a lot of money, surely the resort could spare some for the animals. Sick and dying cats are not good for your holiday mood. All in all, a stunning and beautiful place with excellent staff. There are just some things that need to be tweaked. I understood the resort is quite young, so yes, let’s give them time to learn and grow.
