Great location but otherwise a bit disappointing
We had a mixed experience at Blue Waters, enjoying the location and the good weather but being slightly let down by the resort itself. Our disappointment started immediately upon arrival because despite getting there after the stated check in time, our room wasn’t ready. That of itself isn’t a disaster, but the situation was handled quite badly which created a negative first impression. By way of example, we weren’t given much info during our approx. 45 min wait and at one point when we approached the desk to ask for an update (after about 30 mins), we were awkwardly subjected to what might politely be referred to as a non-guest-facing conversation between reception and housekeeping where the receptionist (apparently at the end of her tether) told housekeeping that she would send us to the room whether it was ready or not. This duly happened, meaning that housekeeping were still finishing up in the room when we arrived (and clearly were not amused at the situation) and the floor was dangerously slippery as it hadn’t had a chance to dry. Unfortunately getting to the room didn’t improve our arrival experience because there was an incredibly bad smell of drains in the bathroom. This meant we had to traipse back to reception, explain the issue and ask if there was anything they could do. The manager was understanding but of course the additional back and forth and waiting to see if the smell could be neutralised or the room changed wasted about another hour of our holiday. Giving credit where it is due, we were eventually moved to a different room without the terrible smell and, although in the same category, it was actually a much nicer room altogether (seemed a little less basic and tired-looking than the original room) so things worked out OK in the end! Apart from the door having a malfunction and locking us out one morning, where we had to ask several times and wait ages for someone to come and help. Generally this seemed to be the vibe on the service front, which made us feel a bit like an inconvenience rather than valued guests. The food on offer was generally fine, with there being lots of choice and variety available and the quality seemed reasonable. The exception to this was the afternoon tea, which was incredibly rustic and not very nice. Service at meal times was mixed – sometimes friendly and efficient, sometimes grudging and slow. It seems to be necessary to make table reservations for the different restaurants well in advance and it pays to work out which restaurants are open on which days and what is on offer so you can plan ahead. The main bar area is welcoming for drinks in the evening. The gym was good and mostly quiet, which we enjoyed. The spa was underwhelming with the quality of the massage treatments and surroundings not being up to the standard of other similar resorts. The booking experience for the spa also wasn’t great – possibly best to arrange any appointments several weeks ahead of time. We were glad to find a lovely spot on a secluded patch of beach at the far side of the resort for whiling away most of our relaxation time – although the sun loungers had definitely seen better days and there was zero service, we preferred this to the main pool and beach areas which were usually crowded with no loungers available and no sign of any clean towels after a certain time of day. It’s fair to say that the lasting impression we have of the resort is that it could do with a bit of a refresh, particularly on the service front. Some of the staff we met were delightful and aimed to please (which was appreciated) but the attitude of some others was really quite bad. We also had a couple of incidents where we were overcharged for food/drinks (drinks bill being doubled by a huge tip being put through and main course “specials” being charged at an incorrect price) – when we raised the queries on the relevant bills, we were met with a fair bit of attitude and a grudging verification / rectification process with no apology being given or concern being shown at how this might have looked. On balance, an OK stay at an OK resort which, with a few tweaks, could be much better.
Family trip to Antigua in March 2020
A little late but I thought we must write a review at some point, this island was unbelievable, the people are lovely and we met some incredible staff at Blue waters such as Tremaine who really went out of her way to entertain our son and had us all laughing. The lobster Thermidor was very tasty and their daiquiri’s I could drink all day every day! Unfortunately there were a few things that sent our visit downhill. COVID 19 was mainly at fault and this caused things to not go as planned, as much as I agree this is not completely Blue Waters fault, when you are paying £6,000+ (hotel all inclusive not included flights before you ask) for a couple and a 2 year old for ten nights you would expect top top top class attention and care. Many music events were cancelled without us being told, such as the steel pan band which I used to play so was looking forward to a night of nostalgia. One of their restaurants was closed early and we only just managed to try it out once. The buffet breakfast ended two days early before we left so we lost this service and had to order by menu what we wanted. The lunch menu was drastically reduced after our first day there. Not once did a manager or higher member of staff come to us and speak to us to apologise for these issues and explain, I assume they avoided this as they seemed to always go and speak to customers who were regulars at blue waters and we were not important to them. In all honesty if somebody came and spoke to us and really tried explaining themselves and offered us some sort of special offer to return again at a later date then this review would of been completely opposite to how it is now. Again I want to make clear I understand these issues have been caused by COVID 19 however we still paid a premium amount of money to get the best possible service you would expect, I was bitterly disappointed with value for money and the higher up members of staff for not rectifying this.
A beautiful property in a fabulous location, so lovely and quiet when we visited, lots of space and availability in the bookable restaurants. Food was good in the main restaurant, fabulous in the higher level restaurants as you’d expect. Bizarrely we found the sea very cold, much too cold for me to venture past knee-height (I really don’t like cold water), although my husband was brave enough to swim and did say it was better once you actually got in. We went in May so maybe the sea warms up later in the year? Quite a few little stones and gravel on the sea bed so you need shoes ideally. We’re only there for 5 nights so didn’t feel the need to go out and about too much, this trip was all about rest and relaxation and we definitely got that, but did go into town one day for some shopping which was varied with quite a bit of choice. Would stay again based on service, rooms, food etc, but would probably go somewhere else based on sea temp.
What a restful place!
My wife and I entered Antigua with less than 24 hours notice, and Blue Waters made us welcome. The place is top notch. But the people really make the place, the staff are so competent, thoughtful, proactive, confident and pleasant, that they really stand out from our extensive experience of the Carribean. Thank you, staff, if you read this.
A lovely day pass at Blue Waters Resort
We booked a day pass directly by calling the resort as we were on the NCL Epic with a stop in Antigua on Thursday, 3/12. We were warmly greeted upon arrival and were in awe of this magnificent and well-appointed resort. This review is specific to the lobby area, pools, beach and Carolyn's. We opted for the non-inclusive option as we were only there for about 5 hours (an amazing 5 hours!). This place is gorgeous! We enjoyed 2 different beaches and the pool near Carolyn's with comfy lounge chairs, gentle lapping waves along the soft sandy beach, while enjoying mainly sun and some short rain showers too. The banana daiquiri was fantastic, as was the flatbread pizza at Carolyn's. We really didn't want to leave, abd we truly look forward to returning for an extended stay in the future.
