My favourite aspect of our ryokan, Kurayado Iroha, is the view of the great torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine from the rooms that overlook the sea, particularly at sunset when the tide is high and it seems to float above the ocean. We really are very lucky to be in such a magical location.
Of course, we offer a lot more than an impressive view. The guests often comment on the food, and we take great pride in the quality of everything we serve. Our traditional Japanese meals are made with the best local ingredients, such as seasonal organic vegetables from the Chugoku mountains, salt from the Seto Inland Sea and seafood caught that same day by the island’s fishermen.
The thing I probably like most about working here, though, is guiding the guests round the island’s most beautiful places, and the thanks I receive afterwards that shows how much they’ve enjoyed it. You make connections with people from all round the world; once, when an Australian guest was leaving, their small child gave me a stuffed koala toy, which I still cherish to this day.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Richard, who's travelled extensively in Japan. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the tea devotee who'll introduce you to the ceremony surrounding Japan's national drink, the noodle guru who'll teach you how to make the perfect bowl of soba and the ryokan owner who'll tutor you in the relaxing art of the onsen.
