The Nozomi Shinkansen is the fastest type of bullet train in Japan, and it’s truly impressive.
Soaring along at speeds of up to 199mph, scenery flying by through the windows, is exhilarating. It’s also surprisingly smooth – there’s no huge vibration or that feeling of shock you get on a theme park ride, and you’re really travelling in comfort – the seats are very spacious and it’s modern on board.
It’s incredible how quickly you can get around – you can be in Hiroshima 95 minutes after leaving Kyoto, 220 miles away. The same train will get you from Kyoto to Tokyo in just over two hours. It makes it really easy to traverse the country and see the major sights in the space of a few days.
It’s also a great way of seeing Japan’s landscapes – depending on where you’re travelling, you might pass rice fields, see the ocean or even spot Mount Fuji in the distance. It gives you a real feel for the different parts of the country, and it can take you into remote places too – take the Shinkansen to the Shizuoka prefecture for instance (where I live), and you’re within touching distance of rolling tea plantations, emerald lakes and rivers.
Living in Japan, I’ve got used to riding the bullet trains, but it certainly makes things a lot more convenient, and you can see the excitement when visitors board for the first time!
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Richard, who's travelled extensively in Japan. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the tea devotee who'll introduce you to the ceremony surrounding Japan's national drink, the noodle guru who'll teach you how to make the perfect bowl of soba and the ryokan owner who'll tutor you in the relaxing art of the onsen.
