Return for lunch just in time to see large elephants arriving at the shoreline for a mud bath…
What makes Bumi so special is that we don’t have any other operators nearby so you only see our vehicles in the area. The scenery itself is amazing and you can often see animals on the shoreline; elephants, buffaloes, impalas, kudus, waterbucks, baboons…
Depending on the guests, we can start very early. We’ve got a spot where we go for sunrise with a lot of beautiful ‘dead trees’. After that you could do a mid-morning game drive and return for lunch just in time to see large elephants arriving at the shoreline for a mud bath and swim in the lake. Or you could do the late-afternoon drive with sundowners. Kariba sunsets are amazing. During a night safari we look for nocturnal species like white-tailed mongooses, owls and maybe even hyenas and genets.
On Kariba, there are certain animals that you can see more often than in many other places. We might have the same species of animals but the behavior is totally different. They are so used to us, they don’t see us as a threat. I’ve seen lions hunting. You can actually get close to them without any problems because they look at us in the vehicle as one big entity. With our elephants, we can get very, very close.
On a walking safari, there’s a lot to talk about – dandelions, ants and termite mounds as well as animal footprints. How fresh are they? Where are they going? There’s so much to learn. Like when elephants feed on mopane trees, they in turn try to defend themselves by pumping tannin into their leaves making them less palatable. Then they send messages through the wind or mycorrhiza filaments to warn other trees. It’s absolutely amazing. Trees actually communicating.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Adele, who's travelled extensively in Zimbabwe. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember – the ranger who can show you the best game viewing and fishing spots on the Zambezi, the guide who’ll introduce you to ‘moonbows’ at Victoria Falls and the locals who’ll share their dinner with you.
