Things to do in Japan

Join a sushi-making class in Tokyo

Guests will make a variety of colourful dishes, including tuna maki, California maki, nigiri sushi, miso soup and tamagoyaki…

By Ken Yoshioka
Tokyo Tour Guide

Sushi-making is an art, with many different varieties – from nigiri, where chefs squeeze the rice and toppings together with their palm and fingers, to inari, where rice is stuffed inside deep-fried tofu pockets.

We offer a three-hour sushi-making class for guests wanting to learn how to make these different types themselves and to hear more about Japanese cuisine, taught by a local woman who can tell you about life in Japan.

Guests are welcomed with a cup of green tea as they learn about different Japanese ingredients like dashi (soup stock), and how to pick the best seasonings, such as sake, soy sauce and miso.

They’ll then make a variety of colourful dishes, including tuna maki, California maki, nigiri sushi, miso soup and tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette made by rolling together thin layers of egg in a frying pan).

Afterwards, guests get to eat the dishes they’ve made – I always enjoy seeing how they turn out – and take home a new skill they can share back home. Gripping the rice is the trickiest part, but once they’ve mastered that, they’re halfway there!

Plan your holiday withAlfred&

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Richard, who's travelled extensively in Japan. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the tea devotee who'll introduce you to the ceremony surrounding Japan's national drink, the noodle guru who'll teach you how to make the perfect bowl of soba and the ryokan owner who'll tutor you in the relaxing art of the onsen.
