Known as Africa’s great inland sea with deserted islands and red-tinged sand, Lake Kariba is an old-world watery wonderland. The planet’s largest manmade lake, reaching 140 miles in length, positively brims with fish, game and intriguing birds among a backdrop of mirror-like channels. Here, the silhouettes of drowned trees emerging from the water’s surface are as mesmerising as the fiery sunsets and shores teeming with thirsty animals.
Activity unfolds around the lake; fishermen catching sardine-like kapenta in the early morning rays while fish eagles patrol the shorelines waiting to swoop down over the glassy waters for prey. On a boat cruise you might see families of elephants swimming in unison as well as crocodiles basking on the shores in the afternoon heat. On land, the Matusadona National Park, declared a non-hunting area in 1958, offers staggering sightings of lion and leopard as well as buffalo that can be tracked on foot. Otherwise head down to the lakeshore for a spot of tiger fishing, one of Lake Kariba’s most pleasurable pastimes.
