A modern oceanside hotel with incredible dining options at the heart of a growing commercial centre

Part of a rapidly developing commercial area, this luxury hotel sits just a stone’s throw from the Indian Ocean and overlooks the urban park of Galle Face Green. The style of the hotel is typical of the Shangri-La character; think modern yet elegant décor that pays respect to the hotel’s setting. Water lilies, the national flower of Sri Lanka, are used throughout the interiors and the real stand-out pieces are the floral-shaped chandeliers that wouldn’t look out of place in a palace. No Shangri-La hotel would be complete without a tranquil CHI, The Spa, a staple of the brand. Again, the hotel has used influences from the island with a selection of traditional local treatments offered alongside Asian therapies.

The contemporary and sophisticated style extends to the 500 rooms and suites. It’s all about sleek lines, muted tones and light flooding in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. You can opt for a room that overlooks the lake and city skyline to the rear of the hotel or over the green towards the sea. If you would like a little outside space, opt for a Premier Balcony Room which has city and lake views. For extra benefits such as access to an exclusive lounge where a variety of drinks and refreshments are served throughout the day, choose one of the Horizon Club rooms or an Executive Suite.

All the rooms provide the same amount of indoor space, but the Premier Balcony Room also has a patch of outdoor space where you can sit and gaze out over the bustling city.

The hotel’s three restaurants have already become some of the most respected in the city, and the stylish lounge is one of Colombo’s best-loved gathering points.

Central
The main all-day restaurant takes you on a journey from Italy to India and, of course, throughout Sri Lanka. This multicultural selection of dishes at the breakfast and dinner buffets and the 11am-to-11pm à la carte menu brilliantly reflects the island’s history.

Capital Bar & Grill
This lively venue offers great food and superb cocktails. The décor is more retro America than Asia and the steaks and seafood dishes are cooked to perfection.

Shang Palace
The signature Chinese restaurant has gained a reputation as one of the best in the city. Come here to lunch or dine on dim sum and dishes from Dongbei, Sichuan and Canton in elegant surroundings.

Sapphyr Lounge
This stylish venue, open from 7am until midnight, has become a magnet for well-heeled locals who come to enjoy the celebrated set Afternoon Teas, in flavours from classic to Sri Lankan.

Pool Bar
The casual bar on the pool deck offers waterside cocktails, tropical juices and light meals from 6am onwards.

CHI, The Spa is the hotel’s tranquil wellness destination. There are seven private rooms for individuals and couples, and the menu ranges from traditional Sri Lankan therapies to wider Asian treatments. Opt for a signature Asian Blend massage or a restorative Ceylon Tea and Spice body scrub. Yoga classes are available in the Movement Studio.

The Health Club is home to a 24-hour state-of-the-art gym with a wide range of cardio and strength-training machines. Exercise classes are on offer at the Movement Studio, and there’s a Jacuzzi and steam room to relax in afterwards.

Families can book suites and interconnecting rooms, plus there are generous dining benefits for children and lots to do nearby.

Located in One Galle Face Mall, Adventure Zone by Shangri-La Colombo is an indoor play space for under 12s. Facilities include a Toddler Zone, a Paint Room for arts and crafts, and a programme of activities such as pop-up coding classes.

The hotel is part of a developing commercial centre so there will be building works nearby for the foreseeable future.
