Makunudu focuses on the key ingredients of a relaxing island escape: welcoming staff and idyllic seclusion.
There’s a refreshingly uncomplicated approach on this small island; you’ll find one restaurant, one bar, and the only difference between the rooms is their location. There’s no pool – but the excellent house reef can be reached straight from the beach, with colourful corals and fish and regular visits from reef sharks and turtles. Make the most of the free snorkelling equipment and head out on an early underwater adventure to work up an appetite for the breakfast buffet.
The thatched-roofed Ara Iru – meaning ‘Rising Sun’ – serves up diverse international buffets and hosts speciality nights twice a week, including a barbecue with entertainment. New flavours of Japanese and Spanish cuisine have been introduced as well as an enhanced wine menu. The Sand Bar is the perfect spot for sunset cocktails – opt for an oceanside table out on the deck to soak up the views. For a little extra indulgence, the Aavun Spa combines Maldivian, Asian and European wellness techniques and traditions.
Rooms are dotted around the island. All are Deluxe Beach Bungalows, set amid tropical vegetation and just steps from the ocean. Recently refurbished, they are charmingly traditional in style, crafted in local wood and stone with high thatched ceilings and earthy hues. Each room has an open-air shower and private sun loungers, but what you won’t find is an in-room TV to distract you from what’s important here – unwinding in the glorious surroundings (although for those who need it, there is free Wi-Fi).
