We arranged to be moved the day we arrived. Limited facilities, awful food selection, staff seemed demoralised, but worst of all Turtle Beach HAS NO BEACH!! It has been washed away, there is tape cordoning what’s left of it off!! To get any kind of beach you have to either use the one belonging to the adjoining hotel but can’t use their beds or a tiny little beach at the side. No snorkelling possible here either!!
It’s ok for the Money
We stayed for 18 nights in May with a 4 year old and a 10 month old so got a good feel for the hotel as below. I think our summary is that this isn’t quite a 4 star hotel and is ok for the money spent. Rooms: We upgraded our room to a sea view deluxe suite which was on the top floor with amazing views and a balcony with sun loungers. Im not sure if our room had been renovated as unlike others we were speaking to at the hotel, our room was of a good standard with all expected features. Rooms were kept clean and tidy throughout our stay and a nice touch is that the is fridge restocked everyday with soft and alcoholic beverages. The only annoying thing is that we ordered a queen bed and they had pushed together two single beds to make this. It would be fine except there was a noticeable ‘step up’ (height difference) between the two beds. Kids: There is a really good kids club at the hotel which we made use of on a couple of days, but unfortunately the hotel wasn’t that busy when we went so not many kids and we felt bad on our boy- I could imagine that this would be very good when the hotel is busy. The meal times at the hotel are very frustrating for families with kids. Breakfast doesn’t start until 7.30am and dinner didn’t start until 7pm. The hotel did offer to make custom dinner for us which we made use of sometimes, but it’s hard to always remember to go and place an order for that during the day. There was also no apparent food provision for babies and we were so glad we took the 40-odd Ella’s kitchen pouches with us in the suitcase! The entertainment in the evening is loud and in the middle of the resort. We were lucky as we were far enough away from it to not to be too disturbed but I could imagine this could be frustrating if you had young kids (like us) and your room overlooked it. Pool/beach: There is plenty of pool choice and plenty of sun loungers when we went. We made particular use of the kids pool which is not too deep and easy to keep and eye on your children from the sun bed. The pools are cleaned everyday but unfortunately suffering from looking dated and in need of some TLC. we found the ‘water sports’ provision pointless as the sea directly in front of the hotel is too rough especially for kids. ‘Captain Sam’ has the best job in the world because all he does is go out in the morning, put up the amber or red flag and then play bat and ball all day with his assistant (literally all we saw him do all holiday). Don’t get me wrong though we had some lovely beach days with the kids and the proximity to the hotel is amazing. In front of the sandals hotel (next door) is a breakwater and we spent most of our beach days here as the kids were able to go in more readily. In fairness to the hotel they offer you the option to go to the other resorts they own on the west coast free of charge where the sea is much calmer. We went to crystal cove for the day and had a great time and did some water sports there. They have a free water taxi to the other resorts on the west coast too which we went on just to relax and see some of the west coast. The only downside is you need to pay for your travel from turtle beach to crystal cove which from memory was something like 60BAJ$ each way. Food/drinks: We had no issue at all with the food or drinks aside from the meal times and also there was nowhere for kids to just grab a quick snack- as mentioned we were grateful that we’d packed a suitcase full of snacks. The option to dine in the two other restaurants is great- sand trap which offers BBQ type food (Ribs, chicken, fish) or asiagos which is Italian. We liked both. For asiagos you can’t dine in there with kids, but they bring the food to the main restaurant which is a nice touch. Cocktail menu is good and plenty of choice. Bbq night on Saturday is particularly good- minute steak, bbq chicken, pork ribs, fish. Etc. There is a great coffee bar and Ice cream bar on site (included in the all inclusive). Staff We had a very mixed bag with staff which really isn’t good enough for a 4 star hotel. Some were nice and kind and others downright rude. Too long to write on here, but one barman really overstepped the mark on one occasion which made the rest of the times we saw him awkward. Other points: -I agree with others that the hotel is tired and in need of a renovation . -As we were there for a long period we wanted to make use of the Gym. It is basic but good enough except The hotel have introduced a one at a time booking system for covid which was very annoying as guests were booking it and not going. In the end I stopped booking and going at the time I wanted and never bumped into anyone! -Location is really good for st Lawrence gap which has some lovely restaurants and good bars. The hotel had a really good choice of excursions which they can book for you which we made use of a couple of times. -They advertised some activities around the resort and during our stay we only saw them do one of them- if you’re not going to do it don’t advertise it! -WiFi is very good and good coverage around the resort. -This is a weird one and I was in two minds about it, but in the main restaurant there are birds flying around everywhere and if you leave food on the table they will come and steal it. one time the bird pooed on a chair and my other half sat on it, we saw this happen to another guest too. On the one hand there is something nice about it and at the end of the day we have built this hotel in their territory but on the other hand if you forgot about them it was really annoying to have your food stolen.
Let me start with the good things first. The room- We were upgraded to a corner suite, oceanfront. The room was spotlessly clean, we had 2 balconies looking over a private area of beach. Our bathroom was pretty good sized (contrary to some of the reviews of small bathrooms). The staff was definitely friendly, our servers would always ask how our day was, and they couldn't have been more helpful. The front desk was most helpful, we never had a problem reserving a taxi and they helped us with dinner reservations. Asiago's restaurant (Italian) was absolutely delicious. Drinks were plentiful, but they did not have pino griggio (yet their sister hotels did) The pools were large enough to accommodate, I never felt crowded. Now for the not so good..... The main restaurant (buffet) was not very good and I didn't think there was much of a variety. I had the same bagel/3 pieces of bacon each of the 7days we were there. Pancakes I assume were GF as they were hard as a rock. Night time buffet was okay, again, just not a large selection. Nighttime entertainment was singers. I wish there was a bit more variety. The hotel is definitely in need of a revamp, but that said, Marriott purchased dec 2019and closed Mar 2020 due to covid. They did not reopen until Oct 2021 and I just don't see that any work around the property was done at all. We did check out a few of the sister properties, we had lunch at Waves (nice property, pool across the street is beautiful) we went to Tamarind and had the best lunch over there. Colony CLub is high end, but not all inclusive. The beach-we were there for a week and the red flags flew daily. Very rough seas. We could swim next door beach at Sandals, but there was a lot of seaweed. You must remember, this is the Atlantic side, so no brilliant blue waters! Bottom line, rooms were great, staff was helpful, food was iffy at best.
We stayed here in the middle of March and we had a brilliant holiday..All staff were very pleasant to me and hubby, always passing the time of day with us..After being at the test cricket match for 5 days and returning back to the hotel we we always greeted warmly. Our room 315 had a picture postcard view of the sea.was always kept spotlessly clean. The bed was huge and very comfortable..When we did sunbathe on the beach(the days we weren't at the cricket) the young man would bring a tray with a variety of drinks on for you to choose from if you wished to.All the food that we had was nice and tasty(and I'm a fussy eater but always plentiful. The drinks man on the beach was a star, always friendly and having a chat with us,as all staff were..I was not going to do a review, but felt the need to having read so many negative reviews (I think these must have come from people who had stayed at a different hotel). We had a great time, that we would definitely go back again..
Beautiful Location - Dream holiday
We visited Dec 2021 so were subject to various restrictions when travelling and on arrival, but this was not an issue. We were a party of 6 (celebrating a 50th birthday) and were checked in efficiently and easily, despite the queue. The restaurant had an abundance of food to offer for all tastes, and the deli open all day offered paninis (delish) as well as daily specials (houmous & pitta was a fave) There were lots of drinks to choose from (although sometimes the queue was quite long to get a drink in the bar by the beach) The room was clean with comfortable beds and plenty of space. The restaurants that you had to book were good quality (Italian or beach restaurant) and the service was good. Friendly staff and the offer of nightly entertainment (mainly singers). But a great holiday.
