Three dimensional safaris at Eagle Island Lodge

You get the best of three worlds here – the water, the land and the air…

By Cindy Boshoff
Director of Sales and Marketing for Belmond Safaris

From a safari perspective, I always say you get the best of three worlds here – the water, the land and the air. We’re on a private concession and you virtually won’t see a single soul from the outside world.

When you open your curtains, you almost feel like royalty because you’ve got this big four-poster bed and your own private plunge pool on the deck of your room. As you have your morning coffee outside you can take in the different floodplains that are right in front of you. In the high season we’re completely surrounded by water. You can see elephants up close and hear the high-pitched call of the fish eagle which is very prevalent in this area and the bird that the lodge is named after.

Game drives are always exciting here due to the huge array of exciting wildlife, but this lodge is particularly great for water-based safaris, especially when the water levels are really high. You can explore by speedboat allowing you to cover more ground and see the wildlife you wouldn’t necessarily see in a 4×4. It’s also some of the most romantic scenery. One time, we arranged this whole proposal. The guides took the couple out on the water in a mokoro (a dugout canoe) with glasses of Moet champagne and when they came to this clearing there was a huge picnic lunch set up with a drinks station.

One of the exciting optional activities clients can choose is a helicopter safari over the Delta. We literally take the doors off the helicopter, strap you in and then you can fly as high or as low as you feel comfortable with. Just to feel the wind in your hair as you’re going up is really exhilarating.

Plan your holiday withAlfred&

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Louise, who's travelled extensively in Botswana. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife in Chobe, the village chiefs who'll give you an insight into local life and the helicopter pilots who can land you on an island in the Delta never visited by humans before.
