Sheraton La Caleta Resort & Spa

Colonial-style interiors at a coral-hued sandstone fortress, tumbling down to a seafront promenade.

This dusky sandstone fortress rises above the ocean like a giant sand castle, its coral-pink turrets blushing wildly at sunset. Sheraton La Caleta Resort & Spa is tucked away among tall palms, in a quiet corner of the Costa Adeje. This southern sliver of Tenerife may not be known for its peaceful tranquillity, but Sheraton La Caleta breaks the mould.

A clever use of design amplifies the hushed relaxation vibe: lush gardens wrap around shady terraces, two curvaceous outdoor pools, a spa and tennis courts. Tiny islands of tropical plants are a riot of colour among the tangle of emerald fronds and shallow ponds filled with carp. The retreat tumbles down onto the five-mile-long seafront promenade. For all the sea views, minus the sand, stake a claim on one of the sun loungers on the manicured lawns.

Inside, floor-to-ceiling glass floods interiors with light, casting a warm glow on elegant staircases and cream columns. Ironwork chandeliers and earth-toned furnishings nod to its colonial past. This style streams through to rooms and suites, which are splashed in subdued shades of ivory and bronze and decked out with wicker furniture. A handful of restaurants span Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine, while two bars are perfect for a sundowner – the terrace bar with rattan scoop chairs is a standout.
