Portugal's capital

Soak up the cosmopolitan vibe in Lisbon – it's quirky and cool neighbourhoods are awash with must-see sights as well as centuries-old cafés and riverside bars.

The Azores

Far-flung archipelago

For a total contrast head to the Azores. This stunning collection of islands in the Atlantic, around 800 miles off the mainland of Portugal, are an explorer's paradise. There's lakes, lagoons and valleys on Sao Miguel – the largest of the nine islands – while over on Terceira you can expect a more volcanic landscape.

Riverfront city

Finish off in Porto, a city with a rich history and incredible setting on the steep banks of the Douro River. Head to local port houses to try the city's most famous produce, wander along narrow, hilly streets in the heart of the city, or travel along the picture-perfect Douro River and take a tour of rolling vineyards.
