Koh Phangan Holidays

Beyond the legendary nightlife of its south coast, Koh Phangan offers tucked-away beaches, striking mountain scenery and spellbinding sunsets.

Backpacker paradise Koh Phangan may be best known for its wild Full Moon Parties, but away from its southern coastline, there are palm-shaded beaches in sheltered coves and jungle-draped mountains where the loudest noise is birdsong or the honk of banded bullfrogs. Embrace the shoes-off atmosphere with boat trips to curves of sand that can’t be reached by road or spectacular coral reefs thronging with vivid marine life. For the more energetic, there are trails through stunning (and protected) mountain landscapes which lead to tumbling streams, waterfalls and not-to-be-missed viewpoints.

If all that natural beauty has left you in a contemplative mood, embrace it in one of the island’s characterful Buddhist temples, found everywhere from sleepy villages to leafy hillsides. You can continue the cultural discoveries in the main settlement, Thong Sala, whose night food market fills the air with the fragrant aromas of dishes from all around this part of Thailand and beyond.

Where is Koh Phangan?
The island of Koh Phangan is in the Gulf of Thailand, off the east coast of Surat Thani province. There’s no airport here; access is via the sister island of Koh Samui to the south, which is served by flights from Bangkok. From here, boats and ferries make the crossing to Koh Phangan in 30 to 45 minutes.

Beaches
Away from Haad Rin, the venue for the monthly Full Moon Party in the island’s southeast, there are plenty of quieter beaches where you can enjoy a swim and snorkel, especially in the north. Thong Nai Pan Yai and Thong Nai Pan Noi have squeaky-clean sand, a relaxed feel and just enough places to eat and drink, as well as superb sunrise views. Accessible only by boat, Haad Salat is a glorious curve of white sand backed by palm trees, with a handful of simple eateries to retreat to; Haad Khuad, or Bottle Beach, is equally remote and possibly even lovelier. For water babies, the wide golden strip of Mae Haad connects to the islet of Koh Ma, which is ringed with coral reefs.

Snorkelling & diving
You can easily spend your days soaking up the rays on one of Koh Phangan's picture-postcard beaches; however, the spellbinding beauty of your surroundings may well awaken your inner explorer. If this is the case, the crystal-clear waters may prove irresistible thanks to their warm temperatures and varied marine life. The island is also surrounded by several diving spots accessible by boat, with regular organised excursions enabling you to explore their spectacular coral reefs.
