Not a five star hotel
The resort itself is a beautiful older building, historic with lots of character. I think we just had higher expectations of a “5 star resort” even for Africa standards. The photos make it look much more luxurious then it is. The room was well cleaned but the bed was a hard mattress. The couch was dirty and uncomfortable. The toilet in our room didn’t flush properly. The resort is separate from the public beach by a wall and security kept the public out but security did not interfere with the locals on the beach even when they were bathing/toileting on the beach while we were trying to eat breakfast, it was quite disturbing. The bar was nice- the staff was nice but the food that was included in our half board was sub par. Breakfast selection was better then dinner. The pool looked nice but never figured out how to get a cushion or towel. Again, I think if our standards going in were much lower- I would rate higher, but the place is advertised as a 5 star resort and our room was listed as $760 USD per night. For that much $$$$ I would expect perfection!!!! We had the opportunity to check out early and go to a different hotel, so we did.
Serena Hotel Zanzibar - Home away from Home - Perfect location & Service
The staff at the Serena Hotel was amazing. The actual hotel managers Ali Ali and Abdallah Abbas actually took the time to assist me in booking rooms and getting us the best rooms ever. Every staff member of the hotel from the restaurant staff, the lobby staff, the concierge, housekeeping treated us extremely well. It felt like we were home. Suleiman Naser, who works there at the lobby was amazing and took care of any requests we had. The location of the hotel is very central to all the sightseeing tours, airport, main town, etc. We highly recommend this hotel for its amenities, staff, and location.
Incredibly beautiful, fabulous staff, a veritable treat!
We stayed at this incredible hotel at the end of June 2021. This was the treat at the end of our safari tours through Kenya and Tanzania mainland. What a treasure! I had done research on this hotel location (there are other Serena’s in the chain) and was truly blown away. Modern, sophisticated, but still that authentic ‘original Zanizibar’ charm! Each room had its own character, no matter where your room was located! My favorites were the Presidential Suite (the sitting room even had it’s own loo for guests!), and room #36, which was top floor, corner room with a beautiful view of the water and the old town to the South (looked like Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland.. having a full moon helped, too!). Another room that looked excellent was located above the restaurant area (no problem with noise, etc) that had two single beds and also overlooked the water. The property is in an excellent location with easy walking to sites and shopping. And, it is VERY beautiful! Now let me tell you about the excellent staff. Like I had mentioned, I had done my homework and chose this Serena specifically out of all the Serena’s we would encounter in our travels. I had requested ocean-facing room. ON the water. My tour company had also confirmed and re-confirmed (original trip was scheduled for 2020). When we checked in, there were no rooms with two beds, on the water (except the one over the restaurant, which was occupied). They did upgrade us to the Presidential Suite, but I was heartbroken. Although a marvelous room, this was not what was promised. The manager (Mr. Uledi) personally came up to the room to see what he could do to fix this problem. He then graciously offered a room of our choice at the end of our stay (we would be on the island for a week). He showed us both the room over the restaurant and #36. Even though it only had one (huge) bed, we chose #36 because it was exactly how I had envisioned it! He even arranged for our luggage to be brought from the hotel we would be staying previously, the morning we would move over. And he did! The amazing Yusef walked down at the arranged time and actually carried our luggage back down to Serena! I must say, ALL the staff made us feel like family the entire time we were there! They even gathered to wish us a good trip when we left the next day! My apologies for not remembering everyone’s names (including the staff member who made the trip up to our room to wish us safe travels, as she would not be there at the time we left)! To all the staff from the front desk, to the doormen, to the restaurant staff, to the lounge staff…. We cannot thank you all enough for making this a magical stay, and making us feel at home! And a special Thanks to the manager, Mr, Kurwa Uledi! You’re the best! Definitely will be coming back!
I visited Zanzibar solo in May for a few days and stayed at the Serena hotel. From the moment that I arrived, to this beautiful, historic hotel, the staff took complete care of me and that treatment lasted until the moment that I left. Everyone was so kind, caring, and helpful. Big Joe was especially amazing, but honestly the entire staff was incredible. I truly enjoyed my time at the hotel and I cannot wait to come back and visit again (this time with family and friends).
Definitely my favourite hotel in Zanzibar !
Spent almost a week at the Serena hôtel in Zanzibar, and had an amazing stay. This place is full of magic and history. You feel out of the time. Such an authentic place with a great location, facing the sea with a beautiful pool and in the best part of Stone Town. Streets around are super cute. Also you are near by Prison Island and Nakupemda Island and so many others and can just take a boat front of the Serena. The workers at the Serena are so nice and very careful about clients. Best service in Zanzibar for sure. You will feel like home. AC is perfectly working and silent in the rooms. Beds are confortables. Food was also great. Can’t wait to come back !
