Many of our guests say Baraza is like stepping back in time, but with all the luxuries of a five-star resort…
Come to Baraza Resort and Spa for a beach break on Zanzibar’s idyllic south-east coast. As a family-run business, we put a lot of love into the property, which took us over three years to design and build. Our aim is to offer visitors an authentic slice of Zanzibar culture. We wanted to make sure that when guests open their eyes in the morning, they know that they’re on the magical island of Zanzibar surrounded by its rich culture, heritage and beauty.
Baraza is luxurious and evokes the history of Zanzibar, dating back to the sultan’s era. Picture a fusion of Arabic, Swahili and Indian design complete with arches, hand-carved wooden décor, beautiful antiques and brass lanterns. There’s a romantic ambience of days gone by and many of our guests say it’s like stepping back in time, but with all the luxuries and amenities of a five-star resort. It’s no surprise that we’re rated among the island’s top hotels. Guests love the small-scale nature of the resort, exotic design and amazing staff.
Each of our villas has a plunge pool and is set in sprawling gardens backed by the white sands of Bwejuu-Paje beach. This is an unspoilt and undeveloped area of Zanzibar where you can still see fishermen going about their business. Guests can relax on the sugary sands or visit our Rising Sun Dive Centre to explore the wonders of the Indian Ocean. At our Frangipani Spa, which is filled with gentle spice aromas and candlelight, you can have a relaxing treatment or work-out in the gym, pool or tennis court.
When it comes to dining, enjoy a laid-back BBQ lunch buffet by the ocean and in the evening, the Dahabu Bar is wonderful for a cocktail before dinner at the Sultan’s Dining Room or Livingstone Terrace. We source our seafood fresh from local fishermen and have a vegetable garden for organic produce. If you’re looking for something more exclusive or a special evening, we can organise a private poolside or beach meal.
Baraza means meeting place in Swahili and we chose the name to represent community and social interaction. To give guests a taste of Zanzibar culture, we have a Swahili school where we teach the language and history of the island, as well as traditional palm weaving. We also like to provide opportunities for locals through tourism jobs and training, as well as putting money back into the community. We’ve built a school and maternity clinic over the last 25 years and are currently raising funds to construct a neonatal clinic in the village.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Gemma, who's travelled extensively in Tanzania. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it on their own. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife, the village chiefs who'll give you a genuine insight into local life and the camp managers who can recommend the very best spot to enjoy your sundowner.
