disappointing resort in a fantastic location
Let me start with the good - the resort is located in a spectacular setting and the diving/snorkeling nearby is phenomenal (you pay extra though to get there). Food and accommodations are average at best. Staff is nice but it's only that much one can do when management is not on top of things. I suppose, for honeymooners, who seem to be the target market, it doesn't matter, for everyone else - not worth the money. We are particularly upset that the dive center failed to transmit the diving log to PADI and therefore we couldn't get the PADI certification we paid for. Just another example of how poorly run the place is.
Solo travelers welcome!
First-class resort on a still yet "undiscovered" island off Zanzibar/Tanzania. Your flight will drop off passengers on Zanzibar before taking you to Pemba Island. A long, bumpy ride to the harbor before you are picked up by the Resorts motorboat and taken on a 15-minute ride across the bay to the jetty at Fundu where you are met with a welcoming smile from the managers and the most welcome cool drink and cold facecloth ever! If you are self-drive, you don't want to take the road to the resort, but I believe you can make arrangements at the harbor to park your vehicle there (for a fee). Being a solo traveler can make you stand out, but at this beautiful place, you feel very much at home. I stayed here for 2 nights and wished that I had booked to stay for longer. The resort is going for that Robinson Crusoe type effect, and they have it right, except you don't need to scrounge around for food (OMW, the food is divine!), there is the inclusive bar fridge in your room, and one of the most comfortable beds on a platform tent. Oh, and wonderful sunset drinks at the jetty bar... Plus it's one of the few times you get to see the other guests sharing Fundu with you. Accommodation set back amongst the overgrown forest, with the ever-present bushbaby. Relaxing activities on offer with a well-equipped dive center. Sunset dhow sailing trip with musicians and snacks, dolphin safari, snorkeling off Misali Island. Unfortunately, I arrived a day too late to experience the musical evening on the beach. Lovely swimming pool to cool off in if swimming off the beach is not your thing. Try to book an early morning trip to have breakfast and snorkel at Misali Island so that you can get there before the noisy hordes from other lodges arrive. That way once they arrive, you can leave or retreat to a quieter part of the island. Ablution facilities very basic on the Island, so remember to take toilet paper or tissues with you. Definitely request a walk to the village behind the resort and go on a guided walk through the Spice Garden that one of the villagers is developing, then stop and buy a fresh coconut! Support the locals!
The highlight of our honeymoon
Fundu Lagoon was the final stop of our honeymoon and we certainly finished on a high! We were very kindly upgraded to a beach suite room, which really did add a special touch to our stay. The hotel is spotless and each member of staff so kind and accommodating. The surroundings are breathtakingly beautiful and sipping a margarita on the jetty as the sunset, before dinner on the beach, was heaven! A huge thank you to the whole team for looking after us. From start to finish our entire stay was a dream. If you want to ditch the wifi and walk straight into the Indian Ocean from your room, we highly recommend Fundu Lagoon.
We won a voucher at a charity event for Manta Resort the underwater room. When we mentioned to few friends they recommended us to also go to Fundu lagoon in Pemba. We finally made up our mind and contacted the resort and luckily enough they had availability and were very accommodating. With that positive response we decided to seal the dates and confirm. We arrived there on a speed boat very comfortable and a good experience to a warm welcome from the manager herself. We were shown around and we were amazed and surprised to believe a paradise like this also existed. We were there for 4 nights and felt rejuvenated by the end of the trip. We would love to return at some point and will definitely recommend to family and friends. The entire team is so hospitable! Only thing we would like to add is - more food should be offered with the Zanzibar spices. The rest is very well placed and feels very homely.
Meeting "good old" friends again
My husband and I just returned back to Switzerland from our second visit to Fundu Lagoon and we must say it was hard to leave. Even though our last visit was almost 2 years ago we remembered lots of faces. Food, lodging, service and diving (including coral reefs) have not lost in quality at all and are still outstanding. Medhi has taken over the Diving Center from Filbert. Together with Faki and his crew he is making sure that all his guests receive the best service ever and we have had lots of fun and outstanding dives. Thank you so much! Concidentally Ellis Flyte and Marcus Lewis stayed at Fundu at the same time as we did. It was great to meet them personally. Together with Martie and her husband Rusty they would meet the guests at the Jetty Bar every evening for a relaxed chat. It really felt like meeting a bunch of friends for a drink. Well we only can say: Keep going on like that and we sure hope to be able to come back again! Thanks for making our stay unforgettable!
