A peaceful breakaway
We’ve been to Grootbos before and stayed in both the garden and forest lodge. Both stats were absolutely incredible and I’d highly recommend it. When you arrive, you are very warmly welcomed by security and your guide. Each cottage is assigned a guide who assists you throughout your stay. I really like that as it’s one dedicated person that you can build a nice relationship with. Your guide explains LOADS of free activities (guided nature walks and hikes, safari drives, horse riding, bike rides, beach tours when operational etc) and some paid activities (quad biking, boat tours for whale watching, shark cage diving etc). We stayed in the pre-Covid and Covid times and their Covid protocols were great. There is hand sanitizer everywhere, people keep their distances, staff always wear masks and they offer in room dining at no additional charge. I must be honest that I’ve read one or two comments about one staff member not covering her nose when serving lunch and dinner and we experienced that as well. It was only one server, but to me it is one too many. For the stay, I’d highly recommend the forest lodge. As I mentioned, we’ve stayed in both the garden and forest lodge but the forest lodge is more modern and a few suits comes with a private pool... Tip: Request the private pool suit. The suits are very spacious, has 2 bathrooms (with 2 separate showers), has a separate lounge, fire place and complimentary drinks. Included in your stay is breakfast, a 3 course lunch, 5 course dinner and coffee, tea and non-alcoholic drinks. The things I didn’t enjoy or felt needed improvement were: 1. The food was average for me. I expected the quality to be better and felt that the meals needed to reflect the accommodation, which wasn’t the case for me. 2. There are weirdly no plug points around the bed. We needed to get out of bed to charge our devices, especially with no TV in the room. 3. The menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner was the same for a few days, and I didn’t like that. I liked the small menu on day one but when you see the same limited options for multiple days, it becomes very limiting. As you’ll see in the pictures, the suits are great and so is the service. I’ll definitely be back again when the craziness is over.
2 night stay
Breathtaking place - very peaceful- really nice food and very pleasant staff. The place itself is just stunning and deserves 5 stars. However a few negatives came out - it seems that the staff is not aware that facemasks need to cover your nose (written at time of Covid) furthermore based on similar experiences the place is definitely not worth approx 20000 rand a night - the cherry on the cake is that you are being charged an additional 150 rand per person per night conservation charge (not part of the 20000 rand). Also For that price room pool could be heated. Per comparison garden route game lodge charges approximately a third of the price for a very similar room ( with heated pool) makes incredible conservation work with animals and has 2 game drives included.
Perfect place to escape the rush and reconnect with yourself
What I find. On a whim and after a very demanding year..I decided to treat myself and get away from it all for a few days, and came across Grootbos via my bank's travel site. Grootbos offered everything I was looking for and more; total relaxation in complete privacy when I wanted and needed it and several activities at both the lodge and outside of the Lodge, when I wanted to explore and mingle. I had the privilege of spending 2 nights at the Garden Lodge and 2 nights at the Forest Lodge, both of which were spectacular, although I enjoyed the Forest Lodge much more, as a single traveller. The ancient Milkwood trees were a marvel to behold and enchanted me throughout my whole stay, it actually felt like time stood still, and I was able to fully rest, heal, and rejuvenate myself, after a truly stressful year . I would like to thank the owner, manager, front desk staff(especially at Garden Lodge), my tour guide (Chunmalo) and the friendly restaurant staff for their excellent treatment and care of me, during my visit. Thank you for making my birthday extra special. I look forward to my next visit, as I have found the perfect getaway spot.
Great to visit Grootbos again after too long an enforced absence. The setting is absolutely breathtaking, the service from all the staff was exemplary. Cuisine is excellent and caters more than adequately for kids also. Our assigned guide, Gareth, also went out of his way to accommodate our excursion requests and proved to be passionate and very knowledgeable. Thank-you to the family at Grootbos for making our family stay special and memorable. We look forward to returning as soon as circumstances allow again in the future...
Spectacular Grootbos - A beautiful gem in South Africa!
Our family stayed at Grootbos for the weekend and we had the most wonderful stay! We were greeted by Rebecca when we arrived at Grootbos! On arrival, we were made to feel so welcome and our every request was met, with each staff member friendly and accommodating. Our suites were absolutely beautiful, the views spectacular - it contained everything we needed from toiletries to bathrobes. One of our suites had a private pool which we took full advantage of. We had housekeeping on a daily basis and turn down each evening. Our suites were also kept stocked with water, coffee, tea, and cool drinks. We requested that Grootbos cater Halal and it was wonderful to be accommodated so amazingly - Each meal was delicious, and tasty. Thank you to the kitchen staff and Chef! The lodge waiters were awesome - A big thank you to Fortunate who was the most amazing lady who kept us happy, fed and entertained during our meals :) We did some of the activities offered by Grootbos - we were taken on a 4x4 nature trail and tour of the park - Rebecca was awesome taking us through Grootbos and explaining the floral kingdom which we have a new appreciation for. We visited the Foundation where she explained the wonderful way Grootbos is giving back to the community. We also visited the Ancient caves which was a good exercise for the family :). For a family first, we had horse riding through the park which was met excitement and trepidation - we enjoyed it immensely though. A big thank you to the Grootbos team who are truly the most amazing, helpful and friendly team! It was a wonderful treat to stay at Grootbos and we look forward to returning!
