best get away in South Africa
I have been around many places in the world but staying at Grootbos gave a new dimension to hospitality. It was an experience probably long lasting and needs to be shared with fellow travellers wanting to do something different, besides gourmet eating and drinking fine wines. The place offers a comprehensive package of things to do, to primarily roam around the reserve with knowledgeable guides, Alison was the best, explaining nature, flowers, plants and all other life, insects etc. Most interesting to learn about the famous Cape fynbos and the incredible variety of flowers in this part of the world. We also spent a day watching whales and the big 'five' of the ocean. The lodge is built spaciously, open plan and the suites are beautifully designed, including a superb bathroom. But it was really the quality of food that surpassed all my expectations. For all meal periods, breakfast, lunch and dinner we had interesting combinations and the menu allowed us to taste different dishes each day. The service was competent, friendly and knowledgable. All was simply exceptional. Grootbos is a product unique in South Africa, a new experience highly recommended, certainly not to be missed. It gave as a sense of relief from the dreadful Covid, we felt prtected and well looked after.
Spectular stay in a truly spectacular place . . .
Had the good fortune to be introduced to this exceptional 5-star luxury "bush" experience by friends with impeccable hospitality credentials -- and what a treat it was indeed! Beyond the stunningly beautiful setting amidst the Cape Fynbos on a ridge overlooking the ocean, the lodge provided outstanding comfort, flawless service, fabulous food & beverage -- and lots of wonderful surprises. Not a horticulture buff, I was initially sceptical of the appeal of a 3-day nature experience oriented around flora. What a captivating and eye-opening experience Grootbos delivered! Our charming and incredibly well-informed guide, Alison, brings the Fynbos and forest to life; her passion for the natural surrounds is infectious--we're all converted! Her flexibility and receptiveness to our every wish and desire was truly noteworthy--think we kept her busier than most with extra hiking, nature walks, trail runs and more--never a problem. Keen food and wine afficionados, we were hugely impressed with the quality and consistency of food and beverage on offer, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Definitely left with a few extra kilos on board--as well as some new favourite wines from an extensive and expertly curated wine list composed by wine-loving owner Michael and his gifted sommelier, Nicole. Start to finish, Grootbos is a 5-star experience of note--with just the right degree of Covid compliance. Adding to the experience is the fundamental commitment to community upliftment throughout the entire operation as well as the more obvious dedication to conservation. Your stay at Grootbos supports their various diverse initiatives at all levels. Just one more reason to experience this wonderful place. Thanks to everyone who made our visit so special--we'll definitely be back soon!
The Lockdown had created such a strong desire to get out and visit some of the Cape’s most awesome sites! So, for a frie
An incredible, brilliant and exceptional experience, with accompanying lovely sunny spring weather! The lodge and the fabulous nature reserve is a creation by visionary, founder and MD, Michael Lutzeyer and his family, of Grootbos Nature Reserve. Grootbos is not only about world-class accommodation and facilities, but very much about nature, conservation and community upliftment! Our large suites were well-appointed, with breath-taking vistas over the beautiful Walker Bay, from the large and spacious private terrace. All meals and beverages were well-presented and served by passionate, warm-hearted and well-trained team-members, who didn’t show in any way that they’ve just come out of 4 months of lockdown! Grootbos is also a wine-lovers dream with one of the Cape’s most extensive well-assorted, matured auction and estate wines. Alison was our professional, most knowledgeable and loveable guide on our fascinating 4 hour excursion in an open vehicle through a large part of the nature reserve, where we learned all and more about the enormously diverse and rich fynbos of this most important Cape Floristic Region, with over 9000 species of flowering plants. If you never thought much about plant life around you – this visit will be a life-changing experience in terms of flora appreciation! Grootbos is a romantic, relaxing, educational and a food and wine lovers dream! We also had a 3 hour boat trip from the Gansbaai harbour observing marine life, including whales breaching. Highly recommendable stay, preferably no less than 3 nights. Congratulations and well done to Michael, Sean Ingles and the Grootbos Team and family!
Thank you COVID!
As a South African living in South Africa, I have a “Bucketlist”of many local places I would LOVE to visit and for me Grootbos was close to the top of that list. As I am sure most people are aware that Grootbos rates are better suited to foreign tourists or very wealthy South Africans, so when COVID brought the opportunity of hugely discounted rates (still not cheap mind you, but doable with a bit of planning)and it coincided with a milestone Birthday for me, I jumped at the chance! Best decision ever! We stayed in The Forest Lodge and the suites are comfortable, large and private - I would rate them 4 stars rather than 5, but without a doubt the bathroom and views deserve a full five stars! What makes Grootbos so unique and worthy of the 5 star rating is without a doubt the staff, the food and the activities on offer. On arrival we were met by our guide Jo who immediately made us feel welcome and sat down with us to plan our activities for the next 2 days. What a character Jo turned out to be, entertaining us with her many stories and extensive knowledge. We explored caves and beaches, found giant mussels, drank water from an aquifer bubbling up on the beach, had a personalized “couples photoshoot” with Jo as the photographer 😂, did some land based whale watching (no luck unfortunately), did a Fynbos Safari, a walk through the Milkwood forest and Jo even beat my husband at chess! When we weren’t out exploring, we were enjoying the most amazing meals and service from other outstanding staff members at Grootbos. Sandi, Celeste, Caroline, Ziyanda, Nicole, Lana, Mandy and Zimkitha - always smiling and ready for a quick chat. Also a huge thank you to Nicole who arranged the food and wine pairing for us on our final night - what an incredible experience. I know COVID has been devastating to our country, but I do hope that more South Africans like ourselves take advantage of these discounted rates to experience Grootbos. I can only hope that we might visit again in the future and next time hopefully we can share it with friends and family. Thank you Grootbos - this is a Birthday I won’t easily forget.
Amazing Family Getaway
My wife, son and daughter and I spend the most amazing two nights at Groosbos Forest Lodge. When booking the the trip, which was combined with a Garden Route trip, I was slightly concerned that there wouldn't be enough at Grootbos for the kids to do as it was during the winter month of August. The amazing surprise was that there is too much to do and sadly we didn't even get to enjoy half the activities. Jo our guide was next level great as she had a fantastic report with the kids. We did 2 activities a day, morning and afternoon and enjoyed did day for fine dining and rest. My 9 year old son at one stage during the quad bike ride commented, "look how beautiful this place is". My 13 year old daughter said that this has been one of the best holidays ever. It's not often that you get a destination that appeals to the entire family. My wife and I concentrated mostly on the amazing food and wine while gasping at the breathtaking views from the lodge. It was truly an amazing stay, too short unfortunately so we will be back to enjoy "heaven on earth" once again.
