No words can describe + a belated customer survey
The second part of our tour took us to Grootbos. We were supposed to stay at Birkenhead house but renovations meant that the Royal porfolio group suggested Grootbos as an alternative. And we are truly thankful they did. We may never have had the chance to experience the majestic beauty of the landscape and nature that is here. We also filled out our survey form before leaving and forgot to hand it in, so Grootbos please use this instead and thank all the people from the top down Rooms and location - we stayed at the forest lodge and were met by Jono our guide when we arrived. He dispensed with any paperwork and got us a table for lunch which was excellent overlooking walker bay. Our room was basically a small cottage with a separate living room with balcony, two bathrooms, beautiful bedroom and a bathroom with a bath with some of the greatest views and sunsets imaginable. Guides and tours - jono was fantastic. His knowledge and obviously love of his job and his surroundings for someone relatively young was a credit to the hotel. He took us personally down to the caves and the beach, showed us prehistoric caves, saw a school of dolphins, and on our second day ever so memorable took us for a hike to the top of the mountain all the time stopping and educating us on the flowers and plants. It was mind blowing. The walk through the milkwood forest was also excellent Food and dining - food is included and it’s seriously good. Not what you would expect at all and a very high standard. The dining staff, management, chefs and sommeliers were the nicest people. All in all we truly loved Grootbos. It showed us a completely different side of South Africa that we were not expecting at all but will certainly bring out now adult kids back. Thanks all of you for making it so special.
All I can say is GO! It is the most beautiful Private Nature Reserve. It is peaceful and full of beauty enough to calm the most cluttered of minds! They off horseback riding through the reserve which is included in your price. Absolutely GORGEOUS!
This reserve does everything to perfection. Beautiful accommodations, breathtaking views, amazing wildlife, serene atmosphere, delicious food. This place has it all! I have never stayed at a place where the staff is so passionate about his/her role. Staff is generally excited to be there and share their knowledge. Can't wait to go back!
What an amazing place! The staff are friendly and go out of their way to make you feel special. There are many activities to choose from including forest walks, exploring the caves to horse riding through the Fynbos. There are two lodges, one is family friendly with an amazing kids play room the other lodge is more romantic and perfect for couples. Each of the units at both lodges are stunning with their own fire place. Definitely a must visit!
You could quickly run out of superlatives describing this place. Stunning views, exceptionally comfortable and well-equipped suites, and staff with a “can and will do” attitude. Nothing was too much trouble. For such an upmarket place, there is a casual dress and communication that we found very refreshing. The resort is set in floral bushland with a view to sand dunes and the ocean, with mountains beyond. The colours and bird sightings were pretty amazing in winter. I can only imagine what spring brings. They have their own sustainable farm of vegetables and some animal products (eggs) which starts to give an idea of why the food is so good. The flavors of their produce were fantastic. Some of our favourite dishes on the menu were, starting with breakfast, the freshly squeezed orange juice, whisky porridge, scone and jam (they bake their own bread) and spiced baked beans and egg on sourdough. Later meal favourites included caesar salad, oysters with passionfruit sauce, pork belly and honeycomb ice-cream. Any of their honey was just full of flavor. (A few dishes didn’t make the grade but the others were so good we didn’t care too much). The room was just a delight to be in. A huge modern bathroom, two showers (plus one outside on the deck), and two toilets. Hot bathroom floor and lights to get you to the loo during the night. I loved the bench under the basin that you could store toiletries on and so keep them out of sight. The separate living room had a huge television and two large comfortable settees. There was a fire that they lit. From this room abutted a small kitchenette with Riedel glassware. Included was a well-stocked fridge with wine, spirits etc. which was free of charge and replaced each day. The bed and the linen were excellent and they put in a hot water bottle at night. I also must mention their umbrellas (in the room) that are oblong rather than circular in shape so you really don’t get wet. A highlight was the view. Whether you sit on your private balcony or go up to the main area (where there are plenty of comfortable seats to choose from) the view is one of those that ever engages. Their shop has some pretty upmarket and different gifts (and they are expensive). Note though that the receipt they gave us, which they were adamant was sufficient to claim a VAT refund at the airport, in fact did not suffice. Nevertheless, they quickly e-mailed us a correct tax invoice when we requested one on our arrival home. We had terrible weather on the first of two days that we were there, but it probably let us enjoy the resort more. There are a few criticisms that we have. The massage was quite ordinary. They promised the recipe for the honey ice-cream, but it never came. Finally, and probably the most serious, the services they contracted to drive us to and from the resort to Capetown airport was great one-way but not so good on the return journey. The driver drove far too fast and his car screen, for some of the way, read “check brake pads for wear”. This was a bit of a concern. If you can, visit in the spring or summer though I understand the place is booked out early. I can understand why.
