Joyce’s food and Nathan’s warm welcome
The first safari for our young family (boys 8 and 10 years old - a good age to take them), and we all had an excellent time. The highlight of Thakadu River Camp is the hospitality. From Nathan’s warm welcome, all the staff could not do enough for you. The food is very fresh and flavoursome and allows you to sample lots of traditional South African delights. Joyce was particularly brilliant and was very pleased when you selected her selections. The location of the pool was fantastic- we saw zebra, a huge herd of elephants down for the daily wallow in the mud, kudu crossing the bridge, river monitor etc, etc. Our accommodation was big and comfortable, though could do with a bit of updating/maintenance here and there. Satis our game guide was hugely knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure we had a good experience. Finally, the game - there are huge concentrations of elephants, lots of lion, rhino and buffalo and we were lucky enough to see leopard too. We also saw brown hyeana for the first time. Highly recommended from us.
great time und thakadu river camp
we had an amazing time in thakadu river camp. the staff was super friendly and helpful as well as our guide who told us a lot about the animals and plants and their historical use for locals. all in all it was the best start of our ZA trip! would recommend this place to everyone + the food is amazing :)
This lodge had a lovely location and an intimate feel. The food served was very tasty and delicious but there were no alternatives. The rooms were comfortable but felt very tired in places. The game ranger was not very dynamic and said very little about the park and the nature of the park unless we asked a question. We saw lions up close and most things but no hippo or cheetahs Mr leopard sadly. The park it self was disappointing, maybe I was expecting too much as everyone raves about it. For the price of £350per night I would expect a lot more and drinks included! If this was my only game park experience I wouldn’t waste my money! Pilanesburg is just as good if not better!
Thakadu River Camp, Madikwe, SA
This was the best holiday we have ever had. Thakadu river camp was spectacular. The setting was stunning. There is a river that runs through the property and just below where they serve dinner the animals come to drink on a daily basis. We saw elephants, impala, wilderbeast, zebra etc all just from the comfort of our loungers. The staff and hospitality was second to none. Nothing was too much trouble and they somehow managed to strike the perfect balance between informal & friendly and efficient sevice. They are wonderful singers and performed for us on a number of occasions - even gave me a cake on my birthday along with the performance. The food was great. Three courses for lunch and dinner and a very wide range of breakfast choices. My daughter is veggie and they accommodated this with ease in spite of my having forgotten to tell them. The accomodation is comfortable and very sympathetic to the surroundings so filled with rustic charm. The beds are huge and there is air con which you'll need for 37 degree heat! Madikwe is brilliant for spotting animals too. We saw loads of animals every day. Our guide was Billy. He was exceptional (but I could see all the guides were brilliant by the happy customers also camping with us). His tracking abilities and knowledge were quite unbelievable at times and his sense of humour was just the icing on the cake. We are not a family that likes to do the same thing twice but I am certain that we will be back to Madkiwe and Thakadu.
My husband and I had a great stay. The tens were extremely comfortable, the bed was huge. It was cool and comforting after the game drive. Breakfast was really good. All the staff were very friendly and most accomodating.
