Shadowed by Mount Meru, Arusha offers everything from coffee plantation stays to scenic flights and safari adventures…
Arusha is best known as the gateway to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit but it has plenty to offer in its own right, from coffee plantation stays to scenic flights and safari adventures. The city itself lies in the foothills of Mount Meru, an active volcanic cone that sits in Arusha’s national park. Although often overlooked, this park is filled with wildlife, alkaline lakes and waterfall-peppered forests. Game drives feel wild and untamed – you can even go mountain biking along ancient wooded paths where giraffes and birds flourish.
Thanks to Arusha’s higher elevation, cooler climes and fertile soil, its landscape is rich with green hills, flower farms and coffee-plantations-turned-tourist-lodges. Enjoy cosy cottage stays among the fields, accompanied by log fires and Mount Meru views. You might get to meet baristas like Advent Massawe, who was raised on her family coffee farm and now works at Arusha Coffee Lodge, sharing her knowledge with guests during tastings and bean-to-cup tours.
The best way to start the day is to take a sunrise scenic flight and soak up views of Arusha city, national park and the highlight: Mount Kilimanjaro. If you don’t have the time or inclination to trek up this unforgiving mountain, flying allows you to see Africa’s highest peak in all its glory. Departing from Arusha airport, you’ll float above the clouds for aerial views of Kilimanjaro’s glittering glaciers and soaring peaks, including the hikers’ summit of Uhuru. It’s a magical way to start the day.
While you’re in Arusha, take some time to visit Shanga, a social enterprise that employs Tanzanians with disabilities to make craft products from recycled materials. Tours of the workshop start with a brief sign language session so you’re able to greet all of the Shanga team as you visit. You can stop to make your own necklace, shopping bag or have a go at glass blowing with the staff. It’s a brilliant way to give back while you travel through Tanzania, as all profits for any gifts you buy go straight back into the project.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Gemma, who's travelled extensively in Tanzania. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it on their own. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife, the village chiefs who'll give you a genuine insight into local life and the camp managers who can recommend the very best spot to enjoy your sundowner.
