Magic in Savute!
After a long drive from Khwai, arriving in the open cool living areas of the lodge was bliss! We loved the mix of great service and enough autonomy to feel at home. The staff were kind enough to even let our sons watch the Springbok rugby game! We only had one night there, but the food was outstanding, the rooms superb, the staff atttentive and the view over the water hole brilliant day and night for observing wildlife ( esp elephants). But the real hero is Savute marsh - its an area so rich in life! Sit at those waterholes and the bird life and general game is outstanding. Remember to include Savute in your itinerary - its a must! Belmond do things with a perfect mix of style, grace and proffessionalism. we loved our short one night stay.
Gorgeous camp, great food, amazing game drives!
We had a wonderful stay at Savute from our serenade upon our arrival to the game drive on the way to the airstrip. I was very excited about staying here and Savute exceeded every expectation. The lodge itself is stunning - this is glamping at its best. Our room was very spacious and had everything you could need or want. There are even outdoor showers if you feel like something a bit different. The shower in the room is a lovely waterfall shower for a more traditional shower. Our room had a huge deck off the front if you wanted to sit outside and watch the animals head over to the watering hole off the main building. The rooms are air conditioned so you will have a very comfortable rest. The property isn't fenced so you will need to be escorted when it's dark, but that means you can hear the animals at night which is amazing. Morning wake up comes with a canvas duffle bag with a coffee press, tea, a thermos of hot water, and cups if you want a cup of something before you head out for breakfast. The main area has a lovely bar and lounge area where you can enjoy tea and drinks in the afternoon (with delicious treats) before you go out on the evening game drive. The watering hole is off the main deck by the restaurant so you can see whatever comes to the watering hole as you enjoy your meal. There is also a hide underneath the deck so you can watch the animals at eye level. The food here is terrific with very plentiful portions. Chef Martin does a great job giving you tasty options at every meal. Chief, Makema, Banks, and Zaza will take very good care of you. The lodge also has a small gift shop with lots of products made by the staff. Taking home a lovely gift made by someone you met at the lodge makes the gift even more special. We also had spectacular game drives during our stay. A special thanks to OB for showing us amazing sights and animals. We also learned a great deal about his part of Botswana and his tribal customs. We saw giraffe, elephants (including an elephant we dubbed Vincent as he was missing part of an ear), wildebeest, impala, zebra, lots of birds, African wild cats, and so much more. A couple sightings were truly breathtaking - we saw male lions just lying in the grass sleeping. We were able to get very close to them and get the most wonderful pictures. We had a couple of leopard sightings - one where we saw her cub not far from mom and one where mom walked less than two feet away from the vehicle - sightings like that make you heart stop because it was so spectacular. We also came across a breeding herd where one of the moms was nursing two babies. As elephants don't have twins the mom had clearly taken on a baby whose mom couldn't take care of it for some reason. Highly recommend Savute to everyone - you will not be disappointed.
AMAZING, INCREDIBLE, 10/10 experience
I will try to put into words how amazing our experience here was, but it will be hard. From our beautiful singing welcome to our rooms to just everything there, we had such an incredible time at Savute Elephant Lodge. We were picked up at the airstrip by our wonderful guide, Richard, who immediately made sure we had a good flight and we’re ready to see some amazing animals. We were then welcomed by the beautiful warm singing and more delicious welcome drinks. We were then greeted by the managers, Maps and Baker, who debriefed us on the property and took us to our rooms. Our rooms were nothing short of beautiful and had every amenity you could need to be comfortable. There was air conditioning as well as heat when it got chilly at night to ensure being as comfortable as possible. Our guide, Richard, was so so amazing. He was enthusiastic, funny, smart, and truly cared about our experience. He went out of his way to make sure things were going well and we loved when he joined us for dinner. Belmond is lucky to have him as part of their team. The food was incredible and there was always something for everyone. All the staff were just amazing and caring and I truly felt as though they were my friends. The wifi only worked in the main reception area but you’re too busy to be on wifi so it was not an issue for us whatsoever ever. Overall I could not recommend Savute Elephant lodge more to anyone who is looking for a truly luxury experience and seeing some of the most incredible animals ever. Belmond really did it right here!! I cannot wait to come back and spend more time with the staff and see more animals. We didn’t want to leave!!
Beautiful great camp. This camp has been refreshed so it’s more modern in style. The tent was fabulous, with ample places to charge our electronics. Very clean. The public areas are beautiful, the food was delicious and fresh. We loved the staff and were quite surprised and pleased to have a woman guide, LG. She is an amazing lion hunter! We went at the end of the wet season. The animal viewing was not the best. But our guide really did a great job of finding animals. It’s in Chobe Game Reserve, known for its large herds of elephants. I was disappointed we didn’t see them because of the time of year we were there. But we did see lots of lions, giraffes and trees full of vultures.
Is there a word that implies more than epic? What a wonderful gem of a place. The lodge is very comfortable and well equipped. Don’t forgo the outdoor shower; turn the lights off and shower under a sky full of stars. WiFi is only accessible at the main area but if you’re there to get away, it’s certainly no bother. Our guide was Obie. He is so very knowledgeable about the animals, flora and fauna and also taught us much about traditional Africa. We saw herds of elephants, zebra, giraffe, impala (of course), lions, leopards and we actually saw a cheetah take down an impala. I can’t say enough about Savute Elephant Lodge. As well, get a massage by Kenny…..she is magnificent! And the food…..I’m gluten free and they accommodated me beautifully. Muffins, deserts….sooo very good. I want to bring my grandson (10 years) to Africa and I think this would be a good place. Thanks to all!
