Tea plantation views and chimpanzee treks at Nyungwe House

We’re surrounded by lime-green tea fields and Nyungwe National Park, which is home to 20 percent of Africa’s apes…

Nyungwe House is a luxury nature resort set on a tea plantation at the edge of Africa’s largest mountain rainforest. Nyungwe National Park is home to 20 percent of the continent’s apes, as well as waterfalls and canopy walkways with dizzying suspension bridges. Most guests come for the spectacular hikes and to track chimpanzees in the park – you might even spot endangered primates like owl-faced monkeys.

When One&Only took over Nyungwe House in 2018, we gave back the on-site Gisakura tea plantation to the locals, so it’s a beautiful symbiosis between us and the community. We’re surrounded by lime-green tea fields and Nyungwe Forest – there are no fences so you’re immersed in nature. We have five clusters of treetop villas on stilts, with decks overlooking the trees. You can sit and watch the mist rolling in while monkeys run around, it’s magical. The décor is all earthy tones with roaring fireplaces, African art and locally-made wooden statues.

What really makes us stand out is the unique activities at Nyungwe House and the passion of our team, who love helping guests connect with Mother Nature. In addition to chimp tracking in the national park, you can enjoy our popular tea plantation tour and tasting session, nocturnal animal spotting walks and stargazing experiences. Guests like relaxing in our spa and heated infinity pool after a long hike; we also offer yoga, mountain biking and even spear throwing. It’s like nature’s bootcamp here.

When it comes to food, our concept is fresh, farm-to-table cuisine. As well as our main restaurant and bar, we organise private dining experiences around the resort, whether you want a table in the tea plantation or to eat on a rainforest deck. My favourite is our special cultural evening, where we gather outside for a BBQ and invite performers in from the local cultural village to share traditional dancing and stories about Rwanda. It’s all about bringing people together around the firepit beneath the stars.

Guests tell us that they love our views and welcoming staff. Our team mostly come from the Gisakura area – this is important to us because we want the community to benefit from Nyungwe House. We work closely with the tea pickers and hire ex-poachers to take care of our gardens, which offers them an alternative income source. We’re also proud to have a silver status EarthCheck certification for our eco-friendly initiatives, which include replanting indigenous trees in the area.
