Stretch your body and mind on a Mysore yoga adventure

I’ll teach you various poses, or asanas, and exercises with breathing, at a pace that suits you…

By Badri Narayana
Yoga teacher

The origins of yoga go back almost 5,000 years, and on this tour, you’ll learn about its history and how the different forms came about, particularly the ashtanga vinyasa style that started in Mysore. But there’s no better way to truly understand yoga than by doing it, which is why an important part of the experience is a one-hour private session with me.

During that time, I’ll teach you various yoga poses – asanas – and exercises with breathing, at a pace that suits you. You’ll twist and bend and balance in different postures, and even if you’ve never done yoga before you’ll feel the benefit. I’ve been teaching for nearly 30 years, and before that, I studied with my own teacher for 15 years, so I have lots of experience with students of all ages and levels of fitness and how to make sure they don’t harm themselves.

Most of the people who come to me enjoy the experience and they can see for themselves how good yoga can be for you. I’m a good example of that: I’m not a young man, but I don’t have any ailments at all. As for my teacher, BNS Iyengar – a disciple of the founder of ashtanga vinyasa yoga – he’s still teaching at the age of 95.

I recommend yoga to everyone. Modern life is so full of tension, but if you practice yoga every day for 45 minutes, it will keep you fit mentally as well as physically.

Alfred & Badri Narayana

Badri’s 43-year yoga journey began under the guidance of Mr BNS Iyengar, who was part of a peer group that developed in Mysore during the formative years of Ashtanga Yoga. He studied for 15 years, before teaching Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga himself for the past 28 years. He takes great satisfaction from providing his students with techniques that will help maintain good health long term. Even at the age of 68, he still practices yoga every day.
