At Sadhna, there’s a story of female empowerment sewn into all of our products…
Sadhna was created by women, for women. Established in 1988, we work with around 700 women from rural and tribal backgrounds in Udaipur and Rajsamand, teaching them handicraft skills so they can make a living. The idea is that the work travels to the artisan; historically in Rajasthan, women weren’t even allowed to step out of their houses, so Sadhna provided a much-needed livelihood generation scheme. Female empowerment has come a long way since then and through Sadhna, women can now work from home while taking care of their families.
Visit our centre in the village of Delwara, where you get to meet the Sadhna women. Each one has been trained in patchwork, appliqué and tanka embroidery and receives the tools and materials they need to create beautiful products from home. Everything is Fair Trade certified and the women get a monthly salary, insurance, education scholarships for their kids and a lump sum when they choose to retire. We also have workshops you can join for hands-on experience with block printing and embroidery, which is great fun. There’s a Q&A session at the end of the tour that often ends in giggles and happy exchanges. Guests love it and the artisans appreciate having visitors and feeling that their work is celebrated.
Taking this tour directly helps women like Choti, who’s been with us since the beginning. She comes from a background of extreme poverty, the youngest child of a large, rural family. When she married, her husband was abusive and out of the house a lot, so she shouldered the responsibility of looking after their kids. Joining Sadhna changed Choti’s life; she was able to educate and marry all of her children, graduated to become master trainer and is now a manager who represents us at exhibitions and fashion weeks. Her journey has been so inspiring and that’s just one woman’s tale – at Sadhna, there’s a story of empowerment sewn into all of our products.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Malcolm, who's travelled extensively in India. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember.
