Learning the secrets of growing tea

If you were wondering where Japan’s famous tea comes from, a visit to a plantation near Kyoto answers your questions…

By Takeaki Shibuya
Experience coordinator for Destination Asia, Alfred&'s partners in Japan

If you were wondering where the tea in Japan’s famous tea ceremony comes from, a visit to a plantation just outside Kyoto answers your questions in a very enjoyable way. Wazuka is one of the country’s best tea-growing areas and one of the most beautiful: there are terraced fields stretching from the top of the hillsides right to the bottom everywhere you look, and it’s a sea of bright green.

The farmers here are passionate about what they produce. The plantation we visit is a not-for-profit agricultural social venture which aims to teach people from around the world about tea, and it’s fascinating. You get to see how they grow and produce the tea by visiting the fields and the processing plant, and you taste different types – they vary quite a lot. Even the lunch is made using tea leaves!

Visitors are happy to discover such interesting, scenic places so close to Kyoto. When you’re in the city, it’s easy to forget there’s so much more to see in the surrounding countryside.
