Things to do in South Africa

Fly and dine in the Cape Winelands

We’ll whisk you away from Cape Town to the country’s oldest winelands where you can enjoy a gourmet vineyard lunch …

By Federico Chabrat
Pilot for NAC Helicopters

Take a scenic helicopter flight to the famous Cape winelands for a gourmet lunch. We’ll whisk you away from Cape Town to the country’s oldest wine region, where you’ll land on this little grass helipad in the middle of a vineyard. The farms we take you to are some of the best in the world and when you walk in you’ll be greeted with champagne. Although the helicopter flight itself is incredibly scenic, it’s about the whole experience of arriving by air and touching down at a chic winery for a five-star meal.

As we depart Cape Town, you get amazing views of Table Mountain and the city bowl before heading to the winelands, which are just stunning from the air. I’ve flown all over South Africa and although the savannah is beautiful, the winelands have views of the mountains, coast and vineyards all in one flight. Most people have never been in a helicopter either so they feel like a VIP – the adrenaline is something else.

You can choose to dine at a range of top-end vineyards in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. We’ve partnered with Waterford Wine Estate and Mont Rochelle to create the best fly and dine experiences you can imagine. At Waterford, you can enjoy a chocolate and wine tasting session, as well as a cellar tour and lunch at their restaurant. The estate lies in Stellenbosch in the scenic Blaauwklippen Valley and has a fountain in the courtyard.

One of our most popular dining experiences is historic Mont Rochelle. Set in the Franschhoek Valley, the vineyard and luxury hotel is run by Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson – I even met him during one trip to the estate. You get to tour the wine cellar and 37-hectare vineyard, then choose a spot to eat your gourmet picnic. Alternatively, you can dine in their Country Kitchen restaurant accompanied by plenty of wine. It’s one of our top helicopter flight experiences.
