Birding on a bicycle around Pench National Park

On a cycle ride you’ll comfortably see at least 25 different kinds of bird species…

By Amit Mukherjee
General Manager at Pench Tree Lodge

Along the wild perimeters of Pench National Park, a cycling route takes you right past the jungle on one side and the rural farmland on the other. It’s a tar road so you can really go the distance if you have the energy. You could easily stay out for a couple of hours at whatever pace you please. In the early morning or in the evening as the afternoon sky turns into warm orange hues. No pollution, no noise, just a cacophony of birds.

On a cycle ride you’ll comfortably see at least 25 different kinds of species such as jungle babblers, varieties of parakeets, rufous treepies and green pigeons. There are wonderful kingfishers depending on the season and you may also spot one of the smallest species around, the sunbird, the colours of its beautiful plumage dependent on the sun’s reflection.

The great thing about these nature trails is that you’re always accompanied by one of our naturalist guides and are free to stop anywhere you please to ask any burning questions and take pictures. You don’t even have to be the best of cyclists. It’s just a fun way of immersing yourself into nature and enjoying a bit of exercise.

Alfred & Amit Mukherjee

Hailing from eastern India, Amit, after completing his hotel management qualifications, moved to New Delhi where he worked for several hotel brands including the ITC Sheraton and InterContinental. He has a passion for nature and wildlife, something his wife has always supported which led him to Pugundee Safaris, known as India’s ‘leading responsible wildlife safari company.’ At Pench Tree Lodge, Amit has been able to merge his passion and profession, a move away from the concrete jungle that he has never regretted.
