There are many walks that you can take from Samode Safari Lodge but the one close to our hearts is the walk to the local village. We have the utmost respect for the tribes and their traditional practices, so we aim to do it in the most organic way possible.
On an outing, we help you understand the dynamics of our neighbouring tribe – its history, culture and lifestyle. You’ll get to learn about the different hierarchies within the community and the fascinating way they’ve built their village. Some of the houses, constructed out of clay, cow dung and sand, must be a thousand years old yet are scientifically way ahead of their time. We’ll show you how they still use original wooden beams even after all these years, how the roof doubles up as storage and how its dome like structure allows for air circulation. They’re the perfect examples of an eco-friendly house and in my eyes architectural masterpieces. We tried our best to replicate these houses on our property but it’s very hard. Our villas are very fancy, but I wish we could make a house like a tribal house; they’re just so good to live in. The feeling you get once you go inside is very welcoming.
You could visit this village for 10 minutes on a walk or you could spend up to a couple of hours meeting the villagers and soaking up the culture. It’s most picturesque when the sun is about to set and, in the distance, you can see hundreds of cows steered by a herder crossing the grassland on their way home. It’s very poetic. There are no words to describe the atmosphere. No crowds, no honking, just the relaxing sight of hooves kicking dust up into the sky.
