A walk through history in the streets of old Bangalore

We cover the evolution of the city from when it was founded in medieval times to its capture by the British…

When people think of Bangalore, they think of the modern city, but if you come on one of the walking tours that I’ve created you’ll discover earlier epochs of the city’s history. The one called In the Footsteps of Rajas and Sultans covers the evolution of Bangalore from when it was founded in medieval times to its capture by the British, which is a fascinating period.

For this, we head to the original city, which started off in 1537 as a mud fort, with a moat around it and its own legend, and a fortified settlement, or pettah, to the north which had different areas for people of a particular location, so there’d be districts of goldsmiths, traders, rice millers and so on. We weave our way south along labyrinthine streets that were formed in the 1500s, through crowded bazaars, stopping at interesting sites including the market and an ancient temple. Along the way, I’ll share some of the intriguing stories I’ve learned about Bangalore over the years to help bring the past to life and show you sights that would be all too easy to overlook – and we’ll also pause for a cup of traditional filter coffee.

The two-and-a-half kilometre walk ends at what’s left of the stone fort built in the 18th century, which was damaged during the British siege of 1791 and later almost completely demolished. All that’s left is one massive gateway, which is a fitting spot to end because it marks the beginning of a new period in Bangalore’s history: the days of the Raj. And there’s a different walk for that…
