Tropical, luxurious perfection
We enjoyed every aspect of La Playa. Absolutely fantastic property, location and staff are the best in south Florida. We chose this property over other competitively priced properties because the low-key boutique feel and direct beach access, but we loved the friendly staff, food and incredible service. This is what value looks like.
My husband and I drove to Naples from Miami to celebrate our anniversary. It would be our first getaway since the pandemic and we were really looking forward to a weekend without the kids. We booked on American Express Fine hotel & Resorts so our expectations were high. Too bad it wasn’t met. Immediately upon check in I noticed an employee with a mask dangling from his ears. This trend continued throughout the weekend. Housekeepers with masks hanging down, most of the staff at the tiki bar were not wearing masks, half of the valets were not wearing masks, the staff at the beach wasn’t wearing masks. At times, it seemed like more guests than staff were taking masks seriously. At the restaurant baleens, even though a sign said masks required by law, I saw two parties in front of us check in without masks and no one asked them to put some on. Aside from masks, the hotel property is dated. We booked lanai rooms as it was advertised as beachfront and the nicest rooms they offered. The rooms were dated, small, we had to let the shower run for a few minutes to get hot water. The rug in the bathroom was too thick so it was difficult to close the bathroom door. And to make matters worse, the walls were so thin We felt like we were sleeping with our neighbors. The beach was indeed beautiful. Although super crowded, and baleens was delicious. Other than that, for the high price and the risk of getting COVID, I would have preferred the Ritz down the street.
Late Summer Get-Away
My wife and I drove to the resort from Boca Raton (FL) in 2 hours. We stayed 3 days and liked it more each day. The highlights were the magnificent beach, the outstanding restaurant and the extraordinary friendliness of the staff. We are experienced travelers and believe that the sunset views from the restaurant terrace were world class. The pool area was charming, but almost superfluous given the quality and tranquility of the beach. We definitely plan on returning.
First of all - Food at Baleen was amazing! Mike and Jennifer at the restaurant made the experience even better. Mike served us 2 nights in a row and was outstanding both nights. Jennifer A made sure that we got the perfect table both nights! Kudos to whoever hired these two - keep them. Our room facing the Gulf was also on point. That said, this is a small resort with really only the main tower for lobby, shop, restaurant and bar. Service at the bar area was shoddy at best. The bartender was very good but the servers were not! Also, no comfortable place for my husband to have a cigar. Overall, Mike and the food at Baleen made our stay. Almost forgot to add. Not much attention paid to the fact that there is a pandemic going on.
Another good experience at La Playa
My wife and I stayed at La Playa over Labor Day weekend. This was our third visit, and the previous two were also on Labor Day (see my previous reviews). This visit was just as enjoyable as the others. This was our first visit since they finished renovations (they were working on those during our last visit). The lobby and Baleen are now light and modern looking, but we felt they lost some of their charm. We stayed in a Premium Gulf Tower Beachfront room as we did on our first visit. The rooms have been refreshed, but not completely renovated. Our room on the 10th floor had an awesome unobstructed Gulf view. The bed was very comfortable and the AC worked well. Plenty of storage space. If you have mobility issues, note that the whirlpool bath/shower combination that we had in our room is challenging to get in and out of. The room was very quiet. The staff and guests were pretty good about wearing masks and social distancing for the most part. Elevators can get crowded. The hotel was near capacity for the weekend days, and the beach was full, though social distancing was used between each set of chairs/umbrellas. On our last day, we arrived at the beach around noon and there was no room for us -- we had to hang out at the pool for a while until people started leaving the beach. We had breakfast at Baleen every day, had dinner there twice and lunch once. Most of the food was very good. The only exception was the octopus appetizer I had the first night -- it was very rubbery. We ordered lunch from the beach or pool most days and that was good too. Despite the crowd, beach service was pretty good, better than previous visits. All the staff were very nice and pleasant. Daily housekeeping was available on request, but we just chose to get towels replaced and skip the rest. We enjoyed our visit to La Playa, and will definitely be back.
