Beautiful hotels, fantastic amenities, with a cost!
We just stayed at the Westin Hapuna for 6 nights just this past week, and it is our second time at the hotel. It was my husband, our two year old son and myself. We first stayed here when it was the Hapuna Prince and they have done some nice upgrades since. We stayed in a 2 queen bed ocean front room, which was lovely. Beds were comfortable and very clean. The positives: The resort itself is truly immaculate. I can't say one bad thing about the aesthetics of the resort and how clean and well maintained the property is. The pool(s) are great, we mainly used the beach though. The beach is stunning, and you have your own little chunk of private beach with chairs and towels along Hapuna Beach. There was always a spot for us even if we went later in the day. The ocean front can't be beat! The staff is very accommodating, and our stay included complimentary buffet breakfast (normally priced at 38 per person). It was delicious and had everything we needed. Everything seemed to be made from scratch even the pastries! Not one complaint with that. However, in the same token, I would not pay 38 dollars every morning per person for that. But, if you have the money and want to splurge why not! My son LOVED the daily koi fish feeding at 9:00 AM and loved the fish pond. He also loved the beautiful flowers and wildlife along the resort. It just smells so good there! I wish I could bottle it up and bring it home. The not so excellent, but still worth 5 stars: Im sure as you have read, they are doing construction. Are room was right above it and we heard it daily, but we aren't picky so didn't really care. Our son makes enough noise for everyone at the resort anyways :) The pricing of everything. I get that your at a luxury resort, and a Westin, but 15 dollars for a mai tai (which was VERY strong and excellent), and 18 dollars for calamari just was intense. We dined at the pool bar one night due to enjoying the hotel too much and not having time to get ready with a toddler, and it costs us over 100 dollars for a casual night in. I don't think they need to gauge the living day lights over the pricing.... But you could go out and get drinks, food, etc. Its not the end of the world. The last thing thats not necessarily a con because we're active and so is our son, but expect a LOT of stairs and walking! Its not a big resort by any means like other ones, but there are a lot of stairs and you can get tuckered out. Overall, we are currently dreaming of booking next January already :) I cannot recommend this place enough!
I spent 10 nights at the Westin Hapuna, and it was a fantastic experience. We stayed in a premiere ocean view room, which was a good size, and had a great balcony with a fantastic view. The hotel common spaces are almost all outdoors, and I cannot overstate how great the views are. The sunsets are dramatic, and there are many areas to lounge on and take it in throughout the hotel. There is a nice Mediterranean restaurant on site, and all the staff was top notch. They provided excellent service and accommodated my party of almost 40 people with little more than a days notice and the food/drinks came out quickly and tasted great. The breakfast area has a nice buffet spread or menu options, and the servers Rio and Ginger provided excellent service all week to us and our party. The bar/restaurant at the pool also was a good place to grab lunch the drinks tasted excellent, kudos to all the bartenders. The golf course at Hapuna was well kept and had fantastic views, the staff there was excellent as well. LaRoma is great in the weddings department, would recommend her and her co-workers to others. The only knock I have is that there is ongoing construction, which didn't interrupt my stay at all, but will be a bit of an eye-sore until complete. You can only see it looking back at the hotel from the beach. I'd rate them 4.5/5 until it is finished. I wish I could remember names of all the staff, as I had only good interactions the entire stay. Lana at the front desk and Shelly with dining were great. We had dinner delivered to the room one night and server was excellent as well.
When we arrived, we were welcomed with lais, necklaces and delicious fresh juice. We stayed in the renovated section of the hotel away from main area, but still an easy walk to pool and beach. We had 2 rooms for our family and they were beautiful, clean, very large, with a small refrigerator and daily water bottles. Very nice patio too. Restaurant staff was always very friendly especially Ginger - one of the hostesses. Buffet was wonderful - plenty of variety and fresh fruit & they had gluten free bread too. Gym had all new machines & equipment. Very clean. The locker rooms were also renovated and are very modern and clean. They also have a spa. The hotel grounds were kept immaculate. The main hotel restaurant - Meridia was one of our favorite dinners of our vacation. Staff was always ready to help if you needed anything. Highly recommend!
I have reviewed this property before. I am pleased to report that my plaintive wails have been heard. The bones here and the staff have always been excellent, not to mention the world-class beach. But pre-Westin ownership, there was more promise here than actual experience. Westin has pumped much-needed rejuvenation into this beautiful property. It remains the junior location on the Mauna Kea resort, but it now holds its head high. Rooms. The rooms have been updated to 4 star status for the most part. I recommend ditching the carpet and installing a bathroom nightlight (instead of full blown, either on-or-off surface of the sun brightness). But compared to before, things have improved dramatically. The 55” (65”??) TVs are essential. Rooms on the 8th floor have front and back screen doors if you want the nighttime ocean breeze, or you can lock down into full AC if you prefer. Lobby. The lobby has a spectacular view, impossible to improve upon. One floor down, the Westin now features a terrace coffee bar by day and actual bar by night. In addition, there is a convenient quick food station nearby. Formerly, both these spaces were open and wasted. Some evenings, there is good musical entertainment at the bar. A terrific spot for adults to relax sans kids and other distractions. Swimming pools. The original pool lives on as a family pool, and is adjacent a patio bar. Westin added an adult only pool on the next higher terrace, which is very nice and tranquil. Waitresses will shuttle necessary beverages up from the lower bar area. Very well done here on both pools. Meridia restaurant. This is a major upgrade from the previous effort. Haute cuisine in a smart casual setting. The opaka paka fish special tonight was terrific. Service excelled. Beach. As mentioned, the beach access is WORLD CLASS. While not technically private, it is the north end of Hapuna Beach, an unparalleled and very popular white sand beach. Staff. Much of the team here is long term. The quality of training and attention to detail is genuinely impressive, from lobby to valet to restaurants. (But avoid the time share vacation club nonsense. It’s a soft sell, so not obnoxious like the insufferable Hilton Waikoloa). Caution. Westin sold the front line room block into private condo ownership in order to finance the upgrades. No harm, no foul at all, just know that daytime construction in that area looks like it will continue for quite some time. Not unlike many Hawaii properties, just an alert. Other. Guests have full access to the Mauna Kea property (beach, restaurants, golf) via convenient shuttle. It’s like having access to two resorts for the price of one. Bottom line. We love this place and will return. If you are a 5 star only type, best stay at the Mauna Kea proper. If 4 stars will do it, the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is your place.
We really found the Westin to be top notch. 4 stars instead of 5 due to the ongoing construction. Service was excellent and friendly. Grounds are beautiful. Amenities are excellent. Breakfast buffet for Marriott Bonvoy status was phenomenal. Beds are extremely comfy. Would 10 out of 10 stay again
