Not what I expected
Not what I expected at all. Costumer service and staff were what was most lacking at this hotel. We came here for our honeymoon Upon arrival at one we were told the room was not ready yet so we went for a drive around the island. We arrived back at the hotel at 8 pm and were given the keys no explanations as to the different areas of the hotel I had to go the following morning to find out the pool and gym hours etc. At the pool I was swimming and got thirst I got out of the pool and asked the server for a drink. He told me I could not order without a face mask on. As a vascular surgeon I understand the need for a mask but not while I am in the pool and complete drenched in water I don’t see the use of a mask in that scenario. I was more disheartened when I saw four other people given beer without a second thought and without a mask especially as they were only sun bathing and they were completely dry. As I was on our honeymoon the first night we arrived late at the hotel so we bought a bottle of pineapple wine at the abc at the corner. Upon arriving at the hotel I asked if they could open the bottle and send up some glassware. They told me they did not have a bottle opener on the premiases that I could go buy one at the store and the best they could do was send plastic cups. Also on me third night we were going to have some tea, we like to put milk with tea so I called the reception to see if they could send up an individual half and half. I was told that they could not that I would have to go down to the restaurant the following day to buy cream and sugar if I wanted. I did not expect this treatment at a hotel of this caliber and of this price range. While the installations were good, the room comfortable but a bit small, the pool area enjoyable besides the waiter, the customer service at this hotel gave a very bad over all experience.
It IS Modern
If you want a lovely Hawaiian experience..do not come to the Modern on the weekend. It is very noisy, very loud and not pleasant. Bar food is fine and outdoor seating, pool-side and wait staff is good. Lots of screaming kids.
Ridiculous 10am checkout
Hotel is fine employees nice but for someone who checked in at 5pm a strictly enforced 10am checkout is a deal breaker. Noon is standard. 11am ok. But 10am??Unless this changes I won’t be back. It should be posted with your reservation clearly and boldly.
Do not go here expecting to be able to eat much if you have celiac disease. I went hungry most of the time and was severely sick after a place claiming to have gluten free food clearly did not. This island is absolutely not celiac friendly except a bakery near waikiki and disney resort.
Better this time....April 2021 Spring Break
Preface, I am a timeshare owner and reserved a total of 6 rooms as we had family travellilng with us. Last time I was at this property was December 2019 for winter break. I have requested our rooms to be close together as much as possible. My rooms were 12th floor and my other family members were on the 11th floor. They did a great job with room assignments this time. I will agree with the dark hallways (has been a long time issue) but I believe the property is working on refirbushing the common areas. My end of the 12th floor was redone and I am happy that is brighter. I will agree the resort fee is high but that is all of Hawaii. Location is ok, next to Lanikai and Hilton Hawaiian Village in the beginning of Waikiki. Super easy walk across the street for ABC Store and McDonalds for a quick bite and sundries. Because they kept their word with not asking me for an owners review and room allocation, I have given them a 5 star. Also if you like the Miami chic atmosphere without all the little kids running around, this maybe for you.
