The resort was awesome and we had a great time. The professional pictures provided by Blinnk Photography at the resort was incredible. The pictures were of high quality and Vanessa’s customer service was fantastic. My wife and I will use them on our next trip to Maui.
A tale of two resorts...or Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde?
Stayed here Tue-Sat week of Easter. First a general comment on traveling fromthe mainland US to Hawaii. It's clearly easier to travel to Mexico or the Caribbean, and no question you should expect most everything to be more expensive in Hawaii (ex. gas was $4.80/gallon)--it is > 2000 miles from the mainland. However, I grew tired of consulting the Sargassum Tracker every month to monitor the ever-growing seaweed problem that's really problematic in Mexico and the Caribbean. You won't find a shred of seaweed on Kaanapali Beach, and if you want a great beach vacation you can't beat Maui. Unlike many hotels in Kauai, you can swim in the ocean here. You can walk up the beach a little to Black Rock and snokel and watch people dive (or mostly belly flop) off the cliff. The Westin does have IMO the best location on Kaanapali (as a public beach, some of the others like the Sheraton get a lot of non-hotel visitors on the beach). This was a case of 2 totally different experiences. Tue-Fri was fantastic. We had a 9th floor Ocean tower room with awesome views. The Ocean is referred to as the 'original' tower so if you are into newer decor/furnishings, don't stay in this tower. But for our needs it worked fine. Biggest complain is probably the 2 twin beds vs having 2 queens. I'd spring for new queen beds before I put money into new furniture/wallpaper etc.. For the first 4 days, we could walk up to any restaurant with no wait, short wait for the elevator etc.. Everything changed on Saturday as a wave of new visitors came in for Easter weekend, and the breakfast wait was an hour at the restaurant, really long lines at Starbucks, just a very overcrowded feeling everywhere. This has been noted on several other reviews. It sure looked like they were selling 100% of the rooms. Agree with everyone's complaints about the pool chairs, #1 aggravation at this hotel. From our window we saw every single pool chair had stuff on them by 6am. Westin dropped the ball bigtime and needs to aggressively manage the situation i.e. go with a reservation process via an app, or remove people's stuff from the chairs if no use is detected within an hour. We sprang for beach chairs 2 days, which may be Westin's end goal, but if so, that's a shortsighted goal based on all the negative reviews. Aside from the pool chair issues, the majority of the visit was great. They are clearly understaffed (they had 1 person checking in people at 11pm when we got there with a line of people waiting) but I'd say the staff that was there deserve a lot of credit for being helpful & courteous. After being closed for so long, they are clearly happy to be working, and I'm glad to do my part to boost tourism. Also really liked how they enforced mask wear everywhere. All staff were fully masked at all times. We backed off a lot of traveling over the last year, and when we did drive somewhere we saw very mixed mask wearing indoors and sometimes no hotel enforcement. Very encouraging to see how all staff and almost all guests were compliant. In regards to Marriott Bonvoy-- I am Lifetime Titanium and that didn't get me a lot here, which is another level of frustration, but more at corp HQ as they are doing their best to water down the great SPG program they acquired from Starwood. And the suite upgrades are laughable, not able to be redeemed anywhere popular. So bottomline, if you are looking to maximize your Bonvoy status, get a bunch of perks for free and experience a relatively empty resort, don't go here. At least not anytime soon. But, if you are dying to have a beach vacation with great ocean views, no seaweed, strict adoption of pandemic guidelines, and willing to put up with some post-COVID hiccups, this is a good choice--but I'd check on capacity before I booked.
Do NOT waste your money
Do NOT waste your money. This property has gone downhill. I have stayed here many times and this by far was our worst experience. The hotel is operating at 96% capacity, yet they do not have the resources or staff to accommodate that number. The grounds are over run with trash and stray cats. There is ZERO waitstaff so if you envision laying by the pool with a drink in your hand think again. Not unless you bring your own. In order to get pool chairs we woke up at 4am every day of our vacation. The restaurants that are open are horrible with 2.5 hour waits. It was completely disappointing.
Lovely stay, room for improvement
Recently returned from a 7 night vacation in Maui. First 5 nights were at the Westin, last two nights were at Waimea Marriott. This review is for the Westin portion of our vacation. Overall our stay way positive. We had a room with stunning views of Kaanapali Beach and the resorts pools. I spent every morning and evening on the balcony enjoying the spectacular views. Spotted whales on the first two mornings from our balcony!! The good: The lobby was beyond impressive, with a waterfall, Koi ponds and pink flamingos. Definitely got you excited when checking in, the Hawaiian vibe was palpable! Beautiful well kept grounds. Nice pool options and slides (2). Food that we had for breakfast and lunch at resort restaurants was excellent. LOVED the beach right in front of the resort! Rented beach loungers and umbrella the first day, totally worth the $70 (2 loungers and 1 umbrella). The second time we went to rent, only loungers were available as it was too windy for umbrellas. Nice pool bar area with ample seating and killer ocean views. Everyone seemed to be adhering to the mask mandate which was awesome. Received a room upgrade (again, the ocean view balcony room was amazing!) and complimentary continental breakfast vouchers due to my husband's lifetime Titanium status. The bad: We were celebrating our 28 year wedding anniversary on this trip and my husband notified the Westin when booking trip. Zero recognition from the resort. Not even a "happy anniversary" when checking in. Also it would have been nice to receive a Lei and/or welcome drink at check in. Nothing. In comparison, upon arriving at the Waimea Marriott we received leis, a welcome drink and to my delight the room had a bottle of Prosecco on ice along with a box of chocolates and card wishing us a happy anniversary. Those thoughtful gestures go a long way with me! Crowds and lines weren't too bad the first couple of days but by the last couple were pretty bad. Arrived at restaurant for breakfast at 8 am our last day and for 2 people it was a hour wait. Line for Starbucks was always at least 10 people sometimes 20 or more, it seemed to move at a snails pace. Looking for a pool lounger? Best be down EARLY. Like before 7 am. I had a birds eye view from my room, all chairs were reserved with towels by 6:30 am, 7 am at the latest. Those towels stayed there all day, even if the guests never used the loungers. There has got to be a better system. The Waimea Marriott staff actually moved towels from loungers if not being used, Westin should do the same, they don't. The crowds and lines were so bad toward the end of our 5 night stay, I was grateful to be leaving. Overall we had a great time at the Kaanapali Westin, our room view was fabulous, great location with an amazing beach. Work on those lines, chair saving and acknowledge those celebrating a special event if you want a 5 star rating.
Very Disappointing and Regretful Visit
Our disappointment in a nutshell — we’ve been here for four days and we can’t get a chair by the pool. We’ve had two cockroaches in our room. They cancelled our breakfast reservations and closed one of the only restaurants that serve breakfast in the area. The Starbucks line is 50 deep from opening until they close at 11:30am. This is our fourth time visiting because we used to love coming here. I am so disappointed and disgusted by our experience this time. We will not be coming back and would leave early if I could without losing so much money. Do not come here, you’ll regret it.
