Great staff let down by overpriced, poor location and predatory pricing
First the good - concierge was *super* helpful - red salt restaurant was great - bed was comfy - little fish coffee plqce (not part of hotel is great and a short walk) - massage therapists were fantastic - staff are all friendly - nice crowd of guests Now the not so good - our room ended up approx $1000 a night. Despite this the hotel is miserly and constantly trying to milk / extract money from you. Parking is $25 a night and they force you to valet park every single time even though there are plenty of parking spaces and most of the time the valet parked our car literally 10-20m from the entrance (during COVID would prefer not to have people in and out of the car for no good reason). Second example - as with all hotels we were at in Hawaii they give you complementary mai tai when you check in. However, the complimentary mai tais were not the normal ones - they were 1/3 sized and served in a plastic cup without garnish?!?! Didn’t make any sense. Why?? Third example - we were told it wasn’t possible to order from the 3-5 happy hour menu at 2:57 (the waitress apologized and said she needed to come back). Not great hospitality / flexibility. Even if they just took the order and out it through 3 minutes later that would have made more sense?!? - hotel is marketed as boutique. It is not a boutique feel at all. It is on a complex with a Marriott and both hotels share the same beach (more on the beach later) and walkway. (Check the satellite view) - pool side food is very hit and miss. The “naan pizza” looked and tasted like gas station pizza. Don’t get me wrong - I love a good gas station pizza - just not in a couples getaway …. - the rooms all face a single courtyard and pool. Imagine 1980s Vegas motel with face lift. There were not enough loungers and pool space (a bunch of people come through from the Marriott to hang at this hotel). On the last day we didn’t get any pool side spots and ended up at a table by the bar. - beach is a sliver - it’s perhaps 20ft wide. Given it is shared with the Marriott next door it is rammed during the day. Relaxing romantic beach it is not. Overall - Great staff let down by poor location, way overpriced and predatory pricing practices.
Disappointed before arrival
We booked the Koa Kea for 4 nights at the end of November. Found out today that the pool and pool bar will be closing the day before our arrival and will remain closed until mid- December. With the trip only one week away, it’s too late to cancel. We’re told we’ll have pool access at a nearby resort. We won’t spend a lot of time at the resort since there’s so much to do on the island- but over $500 per night to not have major amenities when we planned to utlilze them is beyond disappointing.
Fell in love with this place and will surely return!
My husband and I stayed at Koa Kea during our visit to Kauia this October. We absolutely fell in love with the island and considered our stay at this hotel a top reason for it. The hotel is a relatively small luxury boutique hotel - there were several things we loved about this hotel and why we absolutely will return - small size and not resort like, adults only property, amazing yoga classes overlooking the ocean, Red Salt restaurant, free bottled water and location. The service is impeccable. At check in when I mentioned that we were celebrating our anniversary, we were upgraded to a pool facing room and a bottle of wine was sent to the room . When we return, we will surely reserve a premium ocean facing room. Note - a partial ocean view room is not an ocean view room at all - one actually sees the parking lot and maybe a faint side peek of the ocean!
Koa Kea: our favorite small resort--anywhere!
If you want peace, perfection, and a personal touch to your Hawaii experience, Koa Kea is it. We stayed for 5 nights, and the bartender Erin and the bell staff got to know us by name. We ate all 5 nights at Red Salt, and had the best filet mignon and sushi we've ever had. They let us expand our reservation for 2 into a table for 6, and our long-time friends were as incredibly impressed as we were. We will be back as soon as we can, for as long as we can stay!
Charming hotel for couples or those looking to get away from some of the nearby “busier” resorts. Quiet and peaceful with terrific views of the ocean especially at sunset. Excellent food, especially Red Salt, which we think is one of the best, if not the best, restaurants on the island. Walking distance to a few local restaurants and shops off property. Very friendly staff. Everything about this place just felt easy and relaxing.
