Was really excited to stay at the Langham based off social media reviews (mainly influencers on instagram, i know 😑). But the stay was just okay. We booked 3 rooms for our big family and there were a few inconsistencies on the room amenities. Our room didnt have the toiletries and another room didnt have the pens/notepads the other rooms had, our room door bell and television mirror in the bathroom not working (or maybe we just didnt know how to work it?). Not huge deal breakers, but for the price of the hotel we expected top notch amenities. The crew were awesome though, requested a few extra towels and toiletries 2 different times and received it right away. And the guy in the pool, I think his name was Bart was awesome bringing in pool floaties and toys for our toddler to play with. We also asked for any birthday perks upon check in, got told we can have a “birthday dessert” and didnt get it. As for children amenities, we got the teepee we requested during booking and kids bath robe and slippers, but that was about it, no other children amenities that their influencers in Instagram feature. Again not huge deal breakers as its in the hotels discretion if they would provide it, but would love not to be swayed to book here by extra perks influencers show in social media and not get as actual paying costumers. Overall, location was perfect, the people were great. A little overpriced and just had to lower our expectations a little bit.
We got away with our 4 year old little guy to go to the museums downtown and stay at the Langham. The service was both perfectly professional and relaxed. It never felt too stuffy and was spot on. The hotel could use a bit of a facelift, i.e., some cloudy hallway mirrors, worn beverage service desks and the pool area though fun with the twinkly lights above it looks like it needs refinishing (including new metal drapes). The fitness center met expectations and is on the same floor as the Chuan Spa and the pool. The layout of the bathroom in the basic room is perfect with a child. The tub and shower are separate and enclosed in the same space with optional privacy glass. Water can get everywhere without a worry! Bottom line, we love the location and service but the price of the rooms could easily be $100-$200 less for the quality of the space.
Langham has lowered their own previously high standard
Covid has upended this hotel in terms of its amenities (mainly all closed) and service (extremely uneven) likely related to a series of people leaving and rehirings. We have stayed here 4 times in the past. This stay was not up to par. And although they try to make it ok, you have to ask for every little perk bit by bit until you can palpably feel the employees annoyance at your repeated requests. These perks in the past used to be automaitic and included in your stay without question. The current employees may not remember this period or were not present. I would suggest a different hotel in the future, and that a serious examination of which hotels are truly 5 star in the city needs to be had in our hopefully soon to be post covid world. On a more granular level, several rooms wreaked of cigarette smoke (we had to move), requested room items called in advance were not in room (never received all items and promised resort credits not applied), the rooms are scratched and dinged with broken televisions and dirty glasses. Regardless, we feel lucky to have been able to travel, but probably should have lowered our expectations. It was pretty obvious that Langham Chicago has lowered theirs.
The Langham is a must-stay!
The Langham exceeded all of our expectations in dining, hospitality, and comfort. It was my first time staying at the Langham and I have to say this the THE place to stay in Chicago. I frequent various clients coming in to Chicago to conduct business and there is no place I would rather recommend than The Langham. I must say, Philippe went above and beyond to make our trip memorable as we were celebrating our wedding. A wonderful bottle of champagne and a lovely letter was sent to our room. It was completely unexpected and very thoughtful. They even sent up some cookies for our son which was the icing on the cake. At the Langham, you are cared for as family instead of just another "person" staying at the hotel. The Langham represents the pinnacle standard for a 5-star hotel while caring for you in such a way to cater to your every need. I highly recommend everyone to please experience The Langham for yourself. You will not be disappointed, instead they will exceed every expectation.
A Memorable Valentine's Day
I decided to surprise my wife on Valentine's day weekend with a stay at Nobu hotel followed by a stay at the Langham. I booked a stay at the Langham using Chase Luxury Hotel and Resort collection. I booked a junior suite, hoping for an upgrade. However due to a busy weekend, I was understandably not given one. After booking the hotel, I called them to book a reservation for afternoon tea with Wedgewood. I also separately ordered a set of macaroons to be brought to the room after we checked in, and a cake which was supposed to be brought just before check out. Michelle Cheung from the Private Kitchen reached out to me in advance to confirm the tea choices and dietary restrictions. She accurately captured all the dietary preferences and customized the afternoon tea menu accordingly. Very impressive. On the day of check-in, we got to the hotel and were impressed by its lovely decor. Check-in experience wasn't that great. The person behind the reception desk appeared to be not as friendly or warm. Check out experience was not too far from that. But it's OK. Front desk folks must be tired showing their warms to all guests on a 80% occupancy day. We were given a couple of water bottles upon arrival. Thank you. We then proceeded to our junior suite and my wife was really excited to see it! It was large, with floor to ceiling windows on two sides, views were OK, but it was still nice. It had a bit of a dated feel to it, but I was happy as my wife was happy. The macaroons weren't placed in the room prior to our arrival, as I had requested, but I made a quick phone call to the kitchen and they showed up shortly after. Due to Pandemic related dine-in restrictions, the only option was to have afternoon tea in the privacy of our room. It turned out to be a very good experience as we were able to enjoy it in the privacy of our room with zero pressure and were able to pace ourselves and enjoy every single thing. My wife said it was one of the best afternoon tea that she had (other top choices include Peninsula and The Allis -if you were wondering). The private kitchen staff brought a roll-away dining table into the room and set it up for us - that was really nice!! We were fairly full afterwards and for dinner we ordered pasta and chips+Guac. I did not particularly enjoy either of them given how full we were. We did get complementary chocolate covered strawberries, which we did enjoy. Next morning we went to the chuan spa for a couple's massage. Before we left the room, I placed order for breakfast to be delivered closer to our estimated time of return. It is advised to get to your Spa appointment 15-30 minutes in advance so you can get a tour, enjoy the facilities, etc. We were scheduled at the time the spa opens, so we weren't actually able to go to the Spa prior to the appointment start time using our key cards but someone in security helped us out. The massage was fantastic. We also bought some products from them. Additionally, we were able to enjoy the pool (we couldn't do so at Nobu the day prior as it was a bit crowded). The relaxation area was nice and the hosts in the Spa were very informative and warm. There were some light snacks were also available. Some areas of the Spa were closed off due to the pandemic. We returned to our room to find another roll away table with hotbox underneath with our breakfast in it. We set it up ourselves but we really enjoyed all that was provided. After finishing the meal, Michelle brought the cake, which also had a note I had asked them to write for me for my wife. The cake was delicious but since we were full from the breakfast, we took it home. To conclude, 5 stars for the hotel's kitchen staff, 5 stars for the hotel decor, 4 stars for the front desk staff at check in/check out, and 5 stars for the Spa staff, area, and services. Special shout out to Michelle Cheung and her colleagues for a spectacular service. Overall a 5 star stay. Looking forward to go back there. P.s. We did have someone knock on our door at 3.a.m. (some drunk lady). But that wasn't the hotel's fault. The Chuan spa offered us a discount on the products once they learnt of our inconvenience. Overall a great stay!
