Conveniently Located/Amazing Service!
I had the pleasure of staying at the Villa Florence hotel recently for an extended business trip. The hotel is conveniently located near a hub of Lyft bikes ($2/30 minutes, plenty of time to get anywhere). The BART station, the fastest way to get around town is a three minute walk right out the front door. Charmaine, Ed, Felipe, Joe, Nar, Chris and a few I missed made the stay an experience. They accommodated many needs for me during my stay and expediently and professionally. They’re awesome! Stay here, it’s a 7 minute walk from the Civic Center and all kinds of alternate modes of transportation.
Not a great first time experience
Due to conferences in the city, hotel inventory was very low. The location of this property was great but street facing room was very loud... sleep did not come until well after midnight -- not great for this business traveler. There was a lot in dis-repair, from check in where only one computer was working, to several issues in the room (see pictures), to check out where printers were not working. Upon entering the lobby, cigarette smell from the street carried in and up to my room (street facing). Overall the room did not feel 'clean'. The remote control for the heater was sticky (ick!), the desk surface was unclean, and the carpet didn't appear vacuumed. I did not call for help/repairs because I arrived late and had to get up early. Between the room feel, noise, and all the oddities depicted in my photos, I just wasn't comfortable. I DID feel safe -- which is very important. Bedding and towels were clean.
Night Staff goes the extra mile to make your stay miserable
This is going to be long... but TLDR is on title. Just avoid this place if you're arriving at night. How to even start? We got to the hotel late at night and there was an error on the information from our pre-paid booking. Instead of checking us in and saying they will figure out with agent later (or you know, give me the actual procedure); we are received by a VERY rude lady, who says that our "printscreen" doesn't matter, I'm wrong, should provide a receipt - this despite showing that I was actually showing her a PDF invoice from the website reservation - and to move fast or system will leave me without a room. And this was just the start. Their system was about to "go down" for maintenance so they rushed us into a room. The room smelled REALLY moldy, to the point it was impossible to stay. I got back again to the front desk and got informed their system (opera) was down but they would see if possible to change our rooms when it returned. About an hour later (we're reaching midnight), as system didn't got back, they "upgraded" us to a king room, tell that they know some rooms have problems (why giving them in the first place?) and opened manually the doors, saying we could get the keys next day. Alright, so we settle in again, shower, go to turn on the heater and... nothing. After calling front desk they send an agent after a while (poor guy barely spoke any english but was well intentioned) with a remote controller; it didn't work either. Thought that was going to be a long night as we had to be moved again but instead... they just told that an "engineer" would come the next day and we had to sleep on the cold early January weather (with a freezing gush running through the broken AC directly to the bed). Even the agent was surprised as he got the instructions ("Ahh... do I tell this to customers??") After complaints they just gave as an extra blanket (WHAT??). My wife was literally SHAKING the whole night. Comes next day, I'm furious but fortunately met a decent attendant on the desk (he and his manager are the reason Im giving an extra star at all). They apologize, give us complimentary breakfast (eggs and oatmeal basically) that day and work on upgrading to a suite due to our troubles; even helping with the luggage. As system was still off, they tell me to get back at night for the actual keys. This should've been the end of it at any decent hotel, it happens and life goes on right? Well, not here! Come night I reach to the front desk, to get the keys and some well deserved sleep, and surprise surprise the attendant tells us that we have to move again and they couldn't give us that room as it was to be decommissioned. Not kidding you, they actually wanted me to re-pack for the fourth time in less than 24h and - cherry on top - to an inferior room; just because. There's a heated argument where I make a point of absolutely not moving again, much less to some room with potential issues. I just want to sleep for a damn night. She goes on about how I can "stay the night complimentary" and change the next morning, that no one could stay in that room afterwards... Like seriously... After going back and fourth with her manager she just comes back with an "OK, its alright". Hah, what happened with the whole decommissioning thing? Now I'm already 2 days stressed out of my 4 day reservation. The rest of trip went uneventful. Just learned to avoid interactions with night staff and all goes on smoothly. Issue with booking was never solved nor given any thought (why bother asking for the papers and telling you will deal with that in my behalf then?), but I adjusted directly with the booking website. On a side note, most of the staff doesn't speak english and end up as easy targets. There is usually an American supervisor though, and not a single action taken by the night staff here didn't involve going "behind the door" to receive their orders; so I can't really blame them.
Clean and Friendly
My girlfriend and I had a wonderful stay at the Villa Florence. It is around the corner from Johnny Foley’s Irish house which we recommend greatly for a drink or bar food. We appreciated the friendly staff and complimentary drink card we received upon arrival. For the price, the Villa Florence hotel is a wonderful little spot in a prime location!
It’s all right
Villa Florence is all right-not great, not terrible. Not 4 star, more like 2 1/2 or 3. The area is okay during the day, but can be sketchy walking around too far at night. The rooms are extremely small, in the bathroom, you have very little space to turn around. Our sink didn’t drain, nor did the tub. I mentioned it to the front desk and he didn’t seem to care at all, hence the lack of 4 star service. The hallways can be loud at night as well. It was fine at the rate I got on Hotwire, but had I paid full price, it would be another story. Fine for a night’s stay, I guess.
