The staff was very pleasant and helpful.I think there are a few easy fixes that would make your nice establishment not look like you are running on a low budget: There was nice lemon water in the water on our arrival - not to be seen again on our 3 other days. No complimentary coffee (& breakfast muffins) in the lobby. The coffee had no taste and packed no punch. Much too weak. And those teensy tiny mints? You'd look less cheap to have none at all. The water in the room was $2.50 per bottle (!) The only elevator is to accomodate staff! So - if you are disabled and there is nothing on the first floor- there is no access to the elevator for the 2nd floor. I am scheduled for knee replacement. That was no small climb! When we came for the Ecotours we were told to "wait in the lobby" We were strung out in both lobby sections. Then our meeting was in the snack room - standing in front of loud machines, listening to a person with a heavy accent. [I was surprised to see no brochures about Ecotours - since it seems they bring you lots of business. And all the empty conference rooms! - we only needed 1/2 hour at dinner time.] Again, the staff was lovely. The beds were comfortable. I just thought you might appreciate our feedback.
A great staff makes all the difference.
The hotel facility is fairly ordinary - about what you would expect at the price point. However the staff really makes it shine. As the city shut down due to the onset of the Covid pandemic and the hotel's business was evaporating, and even as we canceled the rest of our own stay, the employees were unfailingly gracious and kind and went out of their way to make us comfortable. I would like to single out Lucy at the front desk as being exceptionally warm and helpful. If I had to find a fault with the Handlery, the one thing I could mention is the lack of either a ramp or a lift to the second floor, which would have made it a bit awkward with heavy luggage had an accommodating employee not been right there to give us a hand.
A Diamond in the rough, Handlery Hotel
Please don't judge this hotel by it's outward appearance. My husband and I stayed at the Handlery Hotel during a family emergency. Also I had had major abdominal surgery and was a guest at the Hotel for the first night by myself. Excellent customer service from the start! I immediately entered into a diamond in the rough where the staff bent over backwards to create a peaceful and relaxing relationship with you. Staff members called me by name helped me while I couldn't help myself from my surgery and had a fantastic experience at this hotel. I called in the middle of the night in pain and needed help getting a bag of ice. The The security guard did not hesitate at all to not only hand me a couple bags of ice but to help me with my cooler and luggage since I could not pick up heavy objects. Here are a couple employee shout outs and praises: first the front desk clerk named Alana. She was fabulous!! She walked me through the check in process while my body shook and cried about my family emergency. Alana waved the entire day parking fee so that my friends teenagers could help unload my car into the room. Next next shout out is to Manny one of the restaurant servers who sat and listened to me, sort of cried with me as I talked about my Mexican mom who entered Hospice care for her long battle with Alzheimer's. Manny kept me entertained and distracted and encouraged me to look at the bright side of my relationship with Lucia. It is because of Manny I continued to visit the postcards restaurant and chose to give almost all of my business to this restaurant and hotel as opposed to ordering takeout, pizza or driving to other restaurants. It is because of Manny and Sondra that I decided to hold an impromptu 60th birthday party for my husband and family get together to celebrate Lucia's extraordinary life. My husband and I never once had a bad meal at this restaurant. The food was hot and fresh and had excellent flavor. Way to go chef's. I was thoroughly impressed. An an excellent meal and smiles from staff all along the way. Another server who stood out was one in the morning. He had the chef make a special breakfast for my husband even though they normally don't make their eggs that way. Might I suggest the fantastically tasting huevos rancheros! The restaurant was clean, inviting, and well ran. to the restaurant server named d lastly and most importantly to Sandra one of the managers who helped me organize a last-minute 60th birthday party for my husband as well as a family game night and wake celebration of life party for my adopted Mexican mom Lucia. From the staff's hospitality and excellent customer service to the excellent and tasty food the staff and the Handlery Hotel never seemed to disappoint me or my family. Overall the most friendliest staff I have met in a long time in San Diego. I am a local who doesn't visit hotels often but would come back to this hotel in s heart beat. Well done Sandra for managing your staff. When I talked about you to staff everyone sung your p praises. I seen your praises as well. I come from Coming 20 years in the restaurant business and when all your staff sings your praises as a manager you are doing something right!! Keep up the good work and my husband Brian and I will definitely be back.
Don't judge a book by it's cover
Friendly reception staff made check in a breeze. We had 2 separate nights as we were topping and tailing a trip with Baja Ecotours to see the grey whales down in Mexico. The room was clean and spacious, very comfortable beds (with a view over the freeway). It was lovely to find soap tablets, shampoo, conditioner and even a toothbrush i the bathroom. Good water pressure in the shower. The hotel is clearly a conference and wedding venue. Large swimming pool (get your towels from the fitness centre). Shuttle bus service to local attractions - Old Town, San Diego Zoo (we did not use others, but believe that the airport is also covered) was reliable. Breakfast was expensive - and unreliable - we needed to get breakfast before 7am and were assured that this would be OK. There was nobody around even at 7.10 to get a cup of coffee or anything from. Room service breakfast is supposedly available from 7am, but fellow travellers also went hungry. Postcards (the hotel restaurant) has a small-ish menu.
Love this hotel. The staff is so helpful and courteous, the food is spectacular, the pool is gorgeous, the rooms are beautiful and the beds are so comfortable. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling for business or pleasure.
