Take advantage of Vermont’s beautiful scenery on hikes and nature walks. Head to Vermont's Long Trail, protected and preserved by the non-profit Green Mountain Club, to see the oldest long-distance hiking trail in America. It stretches from the Massachusetts state line to the Canada–United States border, along the main ridge of the Green Mountains, and gives you spectacular views over rolling green mountains.
Another spot we’d recommend visiting is the 237-acre Mount Philo State Park in Charlotte – it was the first state park in Vermont, opened in 1924. Take in wonderful views over Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains to the west. If you’re planning a trip to Vermont in the winter and want to go skiing then head to Killington Ski Resort; it’s the largest ski area in eastern USA with New England’s largest vertical drop at 930 metres, nicknamed the ‘Beast of the East’.
Vermont is also known for producing a variety of great foods including cheese, chocolate, ice cream and beer. Visit one of over 1500 sugarhouses for a taste of 100% pure Vermont maple syrup. Indulge in an increasingly popular wine tasting – savour fruit wines made from ingredients including blueberries, rhubarb, apples and raspberries.
Over in Maine, Portland was voted America's Foodiest Small Town in 2009 and Restaurant City of the Year in 2018, and is home to the 90-acre Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth. Mount Desert Island is Maine’s largest island and a must-visit during a trip to New England. Here you'll find the picturesque bayside town of Bar Harbor, which has shops and restaurants serving seafood including fresh Maine lobster and clam chowder. It’s also a gateway to the green mountains of the immense neighbouring Acadia National Park; head to this 47,000-acre landscape and you’ll be able to explore woodland, rocky beaches and granite peaks along the Atlantic Coast, as well as sites such as Jordan Pond and Cadillac Mountain – the highest point on the United States’ East Coast and a fantastic backdrop for sunrises and sunsets. You may also have the chance to spot moose here since Maine is well known for its diverse wildlife; visit another offshore spot, Eastern Egg Rock Island, to see puffins in the wild – the only place you can do so in the USA.
