Boston holiday highlights

Boston was the birthplace of the American Revolution; discover the city’s captivating history by walking the Freedom Trail, a 2½-mile route through downtown Boston and Charlestown that takes you past 16 historic sites including churches, burial grounds, museum and pretty parks. You could also cross the Charles River to Cambridge and stroll through the courtyards and quads at one of the world’s most prestigious universities, Harvard.

It’s definitely worth visiting some of Boston’s park during a stay here. The famous Boston Common is the USA’s oldest park, covering nearly 50 acres – it has also hosted famous names including Martin Luther King, who delivered speeches here.

The city also has a great range of cuisine; tuck into superb pizzas in North End, Boston's Little Italy, and enjoy freshly-caught scallops, lobster and flaky cod at excellent seafood restaurants such as Legal Sea Foods, Summer Shack and Union Oyster House – open since 1826 and one of the oldest restaurants in the USA. Head downtown to historic Quincy Market for a wonderful selection of local foods. You may also recognise the Cheers Bar, where the famous sitcom of the same name was set; the city has two of them — one at Quincy Market, and both are known for their warm atmosphere and all-American dining. For something a little different, visit Spyce Kitchen, a robotic restaurant developed by a group of MIT engineering graduates which prepares food in "three minutes or less".

For the chance to spot a variety of whale species including humpbacks and finbacks as well as dolphins, head out north on a whale-watching adventure to the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, on board a high-speed catamaran with naturalists on hand to broaden your knowledge. Cruises are also available from Cape Cod.

Boston is a sport-loving city — visit during baseball season from April to October and see its beloved Red Sox play at Fenway Park, the oldest baseball stadium in the USA. Or visit the U-shaped Harvard Stadium in the Allston neighbourhood, home to the famous college’s University team.
