Epic Alaska: cruise onboard Celebrity Infinity
Lyn Anderson tells us what it’s like to cruise through Alaska onboard Celebrity Infinity.
Cruising through the Inside Passage is what has made Alaska cruising so popular. Its beautiful, misty rainforests, snow-capped peaks, ghostly blue fjords and the unforgettable smell of fresh pine trees are something I’ll remember forever, seen while relaxing on our balcony onboard Celebrity Infinity.
The ship is stunning. She is a millennium class ship and carries over 2000 passengers. You can enjoy exciting dining experiences after a busy day sightseeing or, like me, you can have a lovely massage at the Canyon Ranch Spa.
Icy Straight Point was our first port of call into Alaska – this is where the Tlingit Indians have called home for thousands of years. We arranged a whale-watching experience through the cruise line and it was an unforgettable sight to see whales breaching beside us in their natural habitat. They were so close you could almost touch their barnacles!
From there we sailed towards the Hubbard Glacier. We knew we were getting close when we saw icebergs floating toward us of all different shapes and sizes. At the glacier, you are greeted with a spectacular sight – 1350 square miles of clear blue ice. Its open face is more than six miles wide and the ice you can see is over 400 years old! Up on deck sipping hot chocolate with a little liqueur to warm you up, allows you to take in the full sight. The captain turning the ship a full 360 degrees was also amazing, although you can’t get too close to the glacier as chunks of ice are constantly dropping off, some of the size of a double decker bus!
"The ship is stunning. She is a millennium class hip and carries over 2000 passengers. You can enjoy exciting dining experiences after a busy day sightseeing or, like me, you can have a lovely massage at the Canyon Ranch Spa."
The scenery we witnessed sailing towards Juneau through the narrow strait of Tracy Arm is like nothing I have ever seen, everything is so clear, crisp and fresh. People told us before we went it would be an unforgettable trip and I certainly agree with them, I just can’t wait to do it all again!
