Got racially profiled by staff
I was racially profiled by the security staff at Le Vimarn, Ko Samed. This is not your typical hotel review but hear me out before you consider spending your money on this business. During my stay, while sitting on the hotels beach, my family and I were approached by the hotel security guard asking for our room number to see if we were guests. The exact question was “What’s your room number!?” in an authoritative tone. No “Hello”, no “Excuse me,…” So this may be innocent enough. May be he’s trying to verify if I’m a guest given it’s a public beach and, from reading other reviews, the hotels on that beach seem to have trouble with non-hotel guests using their beach chairs. Why I was sure this was racial profile was that we were the only Asian family on the beach that morning. It was early in the day and the beach was empty and there was only 3 or 4 families using the hotel’s beach chairs. All were Caucasians except my family. I could tell the security guard was taking issue with us being there because he was lingering around our area and eyeing us so much. This is not me being hypersensitive. I rather enjoy the beach but the situation was obvious and noticeable especially when there’s not a lot of people on the beach. Perhaps he thought that we were non-hotel guests using the hotel’s chairs (again this is an issue at the hotel). This would be find if the security guard proceed to check everyone. But during the hour that we were there, I did not see him engage in conversation nor pay any attention to any other guests who were all Westerners. Finally, after eyeballing my family (me, my wife, and a 5 year old girl) for an extended time, the security guard approach us and proceed to ask for our room number (again no “hello” no “excuse me”). At this point I knew exactly what was going on and I spoke back to him in THAI indicating that I was guess an asking why he needed to check if we were guests when 1) we were using the hotel’s beach towels; and 2) we had a unique hotel-provided woven bag to carry our stuff to the beach. The security guard’s tone became apologetic in an instance and he walked way. At this point, I was pissed but didn’t want to escalate the situation in front of my family. I thought about letting it go but the issue was pronounced enough that I eventually went to the front desk to raise my concern. They were apologetic (what else would you expect) and the hotel manager blamed language barrier in the way that the security guard asked his question. Well, it’s not just the question or the tone that was used. It’s the fact that we were eyeballed for most of the time we were there on the beach that morning while the other guests (Caucasians) were not bothered. All because we were Asian and didn’t look like we belong in that luxury hotel. The memory of this incident has kept me up tonight, almost two years since the incident took place. I wasn’t going to bother and just want to let it go.. but feel like I need to share my experience. The saddest part of all of this for me is that I’m Thai. I spent my first 10 years in Thailand before moving to Canada. I have never experienced racial profiling until my stay in this hotel.. in the country where I was born. Yes, Le Vimarn is fine luxury hotel. You’ll enjoy your time there if you fit the profile.
Perfect as always
Had another wonderful vacation at Le Vimarn over Christmas. Fantastic as usual. The service was excellent - particularly from Payab at the restaurant (whom we remember providing great service during our previous stays).
Luxury Resorts Hotel and Restaurants
One of the best resort hotels in Koh Samet , the room is very comfort and the taste of food in their O restaurant is excellent and also the services of O restaurant staff are also excellent especially Khun Payap - PayAB.
