Shangri La style
The ambiance at Shangri La is excellent - comfortable, good service, great breakfasts but not over powering. The rooms are really well appointed with excellent bathrooms - and I like the slightly older' fashion with plenty of wood and soft furnishings. The river views are stupendous.
Best property in Bangkok
Have stayed at the Shangri La on numerous occasions, fabulous property, always a pleasure highly recommended,a special mention to Oui in the riverside lounge she provided outstanding service throughout our stay
Usual Shangri La high quality but let down by check out staff
I’ve stayed at other Shangri-la hotels and this one lives up to the expected high standard, however we had an unfortunate incident that I didn’t feel was dealt with very well so it pains me to give them only 4 stars. We had 4 nights in Bangkok and as you would expect, the facilities and (most of) the staff are first class, you could not ask for any more. The food is superb although at hotel prices, expensive compared to the local food outside. The pool area was very nice with plenty of sun loungers and very attentive life guards and staff Our room was excellent. Large, clean, all of the facilities that you would expect and with a balcony overlooking the river (I recommend this as the river is a hive of activity) For me, the location of the hotel is excellent. It is a short walk from the river ferry pier and the sky train station making it easy to get around Bangkok. Compared to other parts of Bangkok it is surprisingly quiet, but close enough to the busy areas and transport systems to enable some exploration. Our flight home required a checkout at midnight on the Sunday so we decided to spend the whole day in the hotel and take advantage of their Sunday Bruch Extravaganza. The selection of food was very impressive with all you can eat lobster, crab, prawns, oysters, wagyu beef, suckling pig and much much more. We made sure we were there for the start at 12 midday so that we could make the most of the spread, and it was all very nice indeed. Sadly, at 7pm my wife started feeling unwell, and by 10pm was being violently ill in the bathroom to the extent that I felt it necessary to phone down to reception and ask if there was an in house doctor. We were told that it would not be possible to get a doctor there before our scheduled check out at midnight, so it was suggested we see the medical team once we reached the airport. Thankfully, after two hours in the bathroom expelling everything from her body, my wife felt well enough to travel. When we checked out I spoke to the duty manager and expressed my concerns regarding my wife’s sudden illness, the first thing she asked was if I had reported it. I explained that I had phoned down to reception two hours ago asking for a doctor, and questioned as to whether it could have been a bad piece of shellfish at the brunch (I’m not suggesting that there was anything wrong with the food preparation, but it may have been a bad oyster or something similar). Surprisingly the duty manager informed me that she had checked with the kitchen who had reported everything was good, and that she had checked to make sure no other guests had been ill, so she felt it couldn’t have been anything to do with their food. I found this odd as two minutes beforehand she didn’t know that we had phoned down to report the illness. At no point did she show any concern about my wife’s condition, or even enquire as to how she was now feeling. She also refused to accept any possibility that it may have had anything to do with the food we had eaten at the brunch. I was, however, offered 10% off the price of our meal. As I said before, I have stayed at other Shangri-la hotels around the world and have found them all to be exceptionally good, and I would include this one in that description, I just feel that our situation was dealt with very poorly and had it happened to a first time guest, may well have put them off being a repeat customer. Having said all this I would have no problem recommending this hotel, Shangri-la are still one of the best hotel chains in my opinion.
Superb hotel. Amazing staff and the location in Bangkok is wow. We had riverview room and the views of the river were amazing. Hotel is next to a sky train stop which is very handy. Luxury in a busy city. Breakfast is really impressive with huge variety. 5 stars
