Perfect hotel, perfect location
I absolutely loved staying here, location was great so easy to get the BTS line as it was right next door but also have the express boat as an option which I loved getting. The rooms where big and the beds were extremely comfy and loved that there was a bath very nice after a long day exploring bangkok. The only criticism I can give this hotel is the amount they want for a deposit when checking in was over £300 for 4 nights and it was going to take 2-3 weeks to be credited back to our account which when you are travelling around asia is not helpful and would highly recommend the hotel change that policy I do think return the money within 5 days at least is realistic. Thank you to the hotel for making our stay so wonderful very nice and would HIGHLY recommend staying here, so quite and so clean and comfy.
We popped I here for a cocktail on the way past., we weren’t stay at the hotel. Lovely bar with a great view of the river. ~300 bhat for a cocktail was ok and was nice to get out of the heat and watch the boats on the river.
Shangrila IS the place to stay in Bangkok!
There are many reasons why a traveller should stay here: 1. Location - accessible by public transport, shops are just outside the hotel (so you don't feel pressured to purchase from the hotel) 2. Facilities - the hotel may be "old" in it's decor, but everything still works (shower hot water comes fast, wifi is fast, the bed still feels new and very comfortable 3. Service - everyone is genuinely polite and helpful and EFFICIENT. Front Office, F&B, and Housekeeping team were great. 4. Breakfast buffet - wide selection, and even though restaurant was full of guests, the F&B team were very efficient. I didn't feel harassed to quickly finish and you don't wait long to call their attention And my room have such a great view of the Chao Praya River, whether daytime or nighttime, I didn't want to close the curtains! Just beware of the taxi driver that will take you to the airport. No fault of the hotel of course. Driver, Mr. Wichen Kraipet didn't want to use the meter and wants to charge me Thai Baht 650! It should only cost about THB 420 (including all toll fees), so I bargained and ended paying THB500. So before you ride the taxi, make sure you have agreed with the price.
Don't stay here
The only positive at the Shangri-La is the breakfast buffet, which is truly incredible I must say. Otherwise, the rooms are really, really dated and old and dirty. Also, I didn't encounter anyone on staff that was able to speak with me in English well at all. I was not asking for great English, but at check-in, the man at the desk was not even able to communicate with me which was very frustrating and led to a lot of confusion about our stay. They also advertise a hotel shuttle boat which I never saw once. The Peninsula seemed to have a great shuttle boat system. I wish I had booked there.
Underwhelming and variable service
As a customer who booked a suite at this hotel I’m extremely disappointed. Our suite smelt of smoke which was a poor start. For some reason we decided to put up with the smell for a few nights as it seemed to come and go. On our third night we couldn’t put up with any longer. We complained to management and they agreed with us. We were later told by the porter who helped move our bags that this is a common problem as the smell travels to the floor below from the smoking floor. Management were responsive and we were moved to another room and given a £15 cake as an apology. In my view that apology was not enough. The only reason I have given 3 stars instead of 2 or 1 is that at times the service is good at the Shangri-La. The doormen are fantastic and the singer in the evening is a joy to hear. The club lounge in my view is below par. For example, I am sitting there right now. Once service arrived I was asked what I would like to drink. I asked for a coffee and my wife asked for an orange juice. My coffee was acknowledged but my wife was told to go and collect her orange juice from the fridge opposite! Begs the question as to why the waitress is there in the first place. Also the orange juice from the previous person that used the table hasn’t been cleared up. It’s a shame that this hotel does not live up to the other Shangri-La hotels I’ve stayed in. They unfortunately do not go the extra mile (even when guests have had to put up with living in an ashtray)and there are major issues with staff training standardisation. The one picture sums up the hotel, great surrounding and fantastic views but blighted by poor service (empty orange juice cup). I’ve actually just reduced to 2 stars in hindsight for half the money I’ve had much better experiences as shown by my previous reviews.
