Gateway to the ‘northern circuit’
Close to the foot of Mount Meru, at an altitude of 1300 metres, Arusha is lush and green. Gateway to the ‘northern circuit’ national parks (including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara), it is surrounded by flower farms and coffee plantations that house some of the area’s most popular hotels.
Arusha holiday highlights
Arusha’s international airport is Kilimanjaro airport, approx. 45 minutes from the town centre, while Arusha airport is the domestic airport used for fly-in safaris, approx. 15 minutes from the town. If you’re transferring between the two airports it should take around an hour. The often overlooked Arusha National Park is dominated by a beautiful backdrop of Mount Meru. Visit Ngurudoto Crater and the Momella lakes – a group of shallow alkaline lakes, each a different shade green or blue, which are home to many water birds including flamingos, Egyptian geese and fowls. The park also provides habitat for giraffes, zebra, dik-diks and buffalo.
