Nice location, nice pool but overcrowded
The hotel is on the beach, which is fairly clean and we managed to swim on our second day when the weather calmed down. The rooms looking to the pool are nice, clean and reasonably spacious. The pool is huge but we find ourselves here during school holidays so the place is full of families with children, which means no peace in the pool or the restaurant. The buffet meals are adequate but not great and so crowded you have to fight the hoards for food. We ate one meal at the Thai restaurant which was much nicer, although expensive. Food and drink here is very overpriced, and you are somewhat captive as you need to take a boat ride to get back to town, although sometimes you can get a 3 wheeler on the beach side. One night we went to the bar for drinks and snacks which were ok, but there were others near us smoking shisha which was annoying. Service here is generally ok but nothing special. Overall whilst the room price was reasonable, everything else was overpriced.
very clean hotel with amazing staff attitude. breakfast buffet was delicious and well presented. the pool is nice facing the ocean. beach just in front of the hotel where you can enjoy it by walking, swimming or relaxing. the sunset view is priceless
Best room boy, best Rickshaw.
This is our first stay at Centara, it's been the most wonderful welcoming resort that we have had the pleasure of experiencing. The massages are great, theme night food delicacies fantastic. We upgraded to a better room overlooking the ocean and had the opportunity of meeting our room boy Sugath. What a pleasure he is, our room immaculate and everyday a new bed display with a dog, mermaid and an elephant made from towels accompanied with flowers. If you have the opportunity to stay at this resort make sure you ask for him. Conveyance is simple with rickshaws, cars and vans ready to hire. We hired a guide for a day to show us around, laying Bhudda, sea turtle sanctuary, Ghalle fort and the infamous stick fishermen. Big day out but thoroughly enjoyed. Suresh is a rickshaw driver near maingate, look him up best ever local experience with him. We rickshaw about 30kms to a waterfall in the mountains, swum in the pool below the falls and have your feet cleaned by the little fish. He buys vegetables on the way and has a local family cook for you, dining by the stream in one with the family. We have had only a week and should have been more but we will be back Bentota Ceysands Resort.
Not upto 4 star standards
I checked in to Centara hotel for one day stay, checkin process and boat ride was very easy. Hallways does not look like a 4 star hotel, dirty laundry carts everywhere, water leaks from the roof, hallways are very rough looking and warn out. Rooms are nice and clean and comes with comfy beds. Dinner anf breakfast buffet is a different story, food was very boring, not much taste to it. Servers do not look like they want to be there, you have to ask for everything. Dessert buffet ran out of food and plates, you have to tell them there are no desserts and plates and they bought some. In the morning buffet craws and everywhere and servers just keep ignoring them and it was disgusting. This hotel is definitely not up to 4 star standards and don't get fooled by the website.
We have previously visited the premises around 5 years ago when the hotel first opened, I must say the hotel has aged a lot and feels heavily used. I like how we enter the hotel through the river; it an interesting approach but the process can be hectic when the crowd builds up. That area is severely understaffed and can be troublesome to find car parks. We ended up unloading (later loading) our bags and parking the car which may come out as unprofessional. Rooms are very spacious and look stunning however we got a distinct damp smell coming from the toilet I presume. We had high expectations in the food department but we were let down due to the lack variety and live stations which I had hoped. But breakfast had better variety, definitely made up the lost expectation. The main reason I disliked my stay was because we were told the check in time was 3; most major hotels have a check in time at 2pm and have the ability to extend the check out time. It is a resort after all and we do want to have a good time enjoying the facilities. They constantly kept calling us to inform that we need to vacate the room and later even blocked our cards. I understand they have alot of guests coming in and rooms are limited, But to my understanding the check in time is 3 so the guests still wouldn't have arrived. In my opinion hotel should have the necessary staff to prepare rooms for the next guests furthermore have the necessary facilities for guests to check out yet use the facilities. For example the pool bathroom is very compact and didn't have shampoo. This is would be an alternate solution. Its tough to blame it on the staff but from my point of view, we get to spend less time anyways since we check in late so we can't maximize on our visit. Other than that I don't have any other major issues and it was a good stay.
