Could not afford to stay here so just went for lunch......the waiter staff were tops, the food although expensive was well worth it. The ambience 10/10....a special place tucked over a lake. After staying in hostels this was luxury for a day !!
Quite simply one of the most wonderful hotels we have stayed in.
It's not just the service, it isn't just the food or the wonderful surroundings, nor even is it the crocodile who turned up by the restaurant looking for breakfast each morning, it's everything about this wonderful hotel which comes together to create the most superb place to stay. Our accommodation was absolutely first class, despite the occasional mosquito getting through the defences, never a huge issue with the repellent applied. Food and service were absolutely first rate.
A place to get away from it all
We stayed for three nights at Vil Uyana, a base for our tours in the Cultural triangle. A discrete entrance gives no clues about the hotel and it surroundings that lie beyond. This is a wonderful place to relax and see and listen to the wildlife. Our paddyfield dwelling, complete with plunge pool and sunbeds, was comfortable and well appointed, a true experience ( please don't make the mistake of comparing with a contemporary hotel room - just accept this is an amazing experience!) The staff were discrete, helpful and charming, tailoring food to our taste when requested. We walked the grounds, and went on the Loris walk, and saw one, so a big shout out for naturalist Chaminda Jayasekara who really spotted it! We've never stayed anywhere like this before, and loved it. Vil Uyana is a really special place.
Difficult to find fault with (but somehow not as good as it thinks it is)
We had a very happy three nights here. The setting is lovely, the rooms are huge, and the staff try very hard. By this time we were possibly slightly ‘jaded’ in our expectations. Our lodge was on two floors (with a loo on both) but it did mean that the bathroom (which was downstairs and outside the air-conditioning) was a long way from the bedroom, and the lighting there was poor, certainly from a woman’s perspective. Also the light switches were complicated in that it was not clear what turned off what. I have to stress that these were niggles, rather than fundamental problems, but they took the edge off what otherwise should have been a fantastic hotel. The food was good and the service was excellent (although we did not avail ourselves of the butler service which is offered and in fact our butler was slightly crest-fallen that we did not use him!)
Elegant resort in beautiful surroundings
We spent four nights at Vil Uyana early in our six and a half week holiday in Sri Lanka. Our paddy field bungalow was beautiful, set amidst an unbelievable quantity of shades of green. From our thatched bungalow we could watch the fruit bats leave in the evening and return in the morning, as well as an array of gorgeous birds. The resort if very well planned to give the impression of lots of space and privacy. It proved a good location for visiting Dambulla and Sigiriya. The pool is attractively located and the neighbouring bar a good place for a pre-dinner drink. The Sri Lankan curries were delicious and the breakfast was fine. My only slight reservation, which accounts four rather than five stars, was that style seemed to be more important than comfort. Rather than chairs, we had some strange stools on the balcony which were too low to reach the wobbly table and the plunge pool with its rigid loungers wasn't very appealing. Also it was great to have a butler, but our butler turned out to be rather busy buttling for everybody else.
