Classy and Quiet Hotel
This was a very good stay. It does fall a bit short of being truly outstanding though. We stayed here for one week in September 2021. Ambience and Location - This is a medium-rise resort hotel whose clientele skews older (40-50+) where the focus is on quietly relaxing by the pool. As a couple in our late 20s, we seemed to be the youngest guests by a decent margin. Everyone was there for some relaxation which meant that although the pool areas were full of guests, it was very quiet. This is not a judgment (we actually like the quiet) but I state it here so that you know what you will be booking. The resort is in Paguera/Peguera which is a seaside beach resort around 30 mins drive west of Palma de Mallorca. Peguera primarily caters to slightly older German holidaymakers but we had no problem as English-only speakers. Virtually everything to see in Peguera is located on the main street (the Bulevar de Peguera on which the hotel lies) or on one of the small side streets jutting off from this. The town was pleasant enough and has a few good quality shops (ie, better than the usual tourist tat, though there is plenty of that too of course) and a reasonable number of restaurants and bars. However, if you wish to visit Palma as we did, it is a little bit far away, with taxis costing 30-35 euros each way. The Good Cleanliness - First of all, and to the best of the hotel's credit, especially given the pandemic, the cleaning was universally of an exceptionally high standard, especially of indoor areas. Cannot fault this aspect at all. Staff - The staff were very warm and friendly and all seemed to be trilingual (Spanish, German and English) and maybe they spoke even more languages. The staff are all a credit to the hotel. Design - The hotel is built around an old villa and the strong bones of the place do stand out. There is a sense of style and class, especially in the communal areas of the hotel. The approach to the entrance does give the impression that you are entering a luxurious place and the location combined with the design certainly gives the impression of this being the premier hotel in Peguera. Rooms - We had a Deluxe Room with Seaview. We picked this room mostly because there is a subtle hint on the website that maybe not all of the standard rooms have a balcony though I cannot confirm this one way or the other. The room was of a good size and we certainly did not want for space. They have planted a number of tress in the garden which meant that our "Sea view", though technically accurate was a description that was a bit of a stretch to be honest. The bed was also very large and comfortable and the aircon was powerful. The bathroom amenities provided were unbranded but were of a very good quality. A Nespresso machine was also provided as was a bottle of water after every room cleaning. The wardrobe space was a good size for two people (tip: the full-length mirror is on the inside of the door of one of the wardrobes) and the hangers provided were proper hangers rather than the anti-theft ones usually provided in a hotel. The room was cleaned every day and most nights featured a turn-down service. The only negative about the room was that the decor did look a little bit dated, especially compared to the communal areas of the hotel but it was not a big problem by any means. FYI, there was not a standard shaving output socket in our room. We have electric toothbrushes which use that socket and this input is not often featured on electric socket adapters so we were unable to charge our electric toothbrushes. Fortunately, the hotel does provide a dental kit for guests. Pool Area - This was nice. The mattressed sunbeds were of a good quality and there was more or less ample shade, which is important as the sun can get very strong. the pool was nice but was unheated (though this was not really a problem). However, one thing to note is that the pool is not particularly large. It's not small, in fact it is a reasonable size but if you are into swimming lengths, you will likely find this pool a bit small to really stretch out. A concern I do have is that the hotel did not seem to be particularly busy and although we never ran out of sunbeds to use, I would imagine that during the high season, there might be a danger of no sunbeds being available near the pool. They have also tried to stuff lesser sunbeds throughout the grounds where they really do not belong which does give a slightly cluttered feel. The Not So Good (But Not Necessarily Bad) Spa - We each had a treatment at the spa. Whilst expensive, these were good (hot stone massage and pedicure). However, the general spa facilities were disappointing. The steam room and sauna were closed - no doubt this was a legal requirement so I am not holding this against the hotel. However, the pool in the spa is very small (and again, unheated which is more of a problem indoors). There are two jacuzzis but they were only lukewarm and did not have any jets for your back (aside from the ingress jet). First world problems indeed. What would really stick in the craw is that access to the spa facilities is for some reason not included in your stay and costs an extra €15 per person! Especially as the sauna and steam room are closed, I would not recommend paying this and only use them if you are having a treatment. Food - This was very expensive and disappointing. We had lunch on the first day. I had a hamburger and it was... fine - not particularly good but not particularly terrible either. I could not escape the feeling that I could have had the same burger 5 minutes walk down the road in Peguera for less than half the price. On another occasion I had the Mallorquin sandwich which was better but still not outstanding. Because of the disappointment with these lunches we never tried dinner because we doubted that the expense would be worth it so who knows, maybe dinner is excellent. Breakfast was good. The spread was not as a amazing as maybe some other luxury resorts but the quality of each item was generally high. However, we only had breakfast as it was included in our stay. I believe they charge €40 per person if not included in your room and I would not consider it anywhere near worth that price however. The breakfast is served on an elevated terrace which is very pleasant and one morning, they had a guitarist playing music whilst everyone ate. Combined with the location, this made for a really charming breakfast. Pricing of Extras - This is where the hotel really loses its 5/5 rating. Whilst the rate we paid for the room was very reasonable which is why we enjoyed our stay overall, there is an ever-present sense of the hotel trying to extract money from you at almost every turn, more so than in any other hotel we have ever visited. Everything is extremely expensive (€4.50 for a 200ml of diet coke at the poolside, really?) and it just does not feel luxurious enough to really justify the prices charged. The prices in the hotel are really jarring because of what is available immediately outside of it. For that reason we avoided spending money in the hotel. There are a few really good restaurants in Peguera which will cost a fraction of anything in the hotel- go to them instead. Overall, a very pleasant stay but I think this only just meets the quality expected of a 5* hotel.
Great little hotel!
We are repeaters of Secrets resorts (previously been to Secrets Playa Mujeres and Secrets Maroma in Mexico) so we decided to try Secret's Villamil Mallorca. The hotel is approximately 40 minutes bus ride from the airport. On our arrival, we were welcomed with a cold towel and Cava. We were upgraded to preferred club swim-up room. The room was lovely and spacious with a mini bar. Breakfast is served at the World Cafe which had various selections of bread, pancakes and eggs cooked to your liking. Lunch is served at the Olio restaurant next to the main pool which had seafood/Hamburgers/ Pizza etc and the Barefoot grill which served sandwiches and delicious drinks. Dinner was at the Seaside Grill served massive portion of Chateubriand steak/fish etc all delicious but one has to book at the reception. Varied entertainment every evening with delicious cocktails served at the Sky Bar. The hotel is in a prime location, with sandy beach at the rear and plenty of shops/restaurants/bars just outside the front entrance. Staff and Management are friendly and helpful. Although the resort is small compared to the other Secrets, its a different concept to the Caribbean resorts, nevertheless the service/food/drinks are good and for this reason we would consider revisting the resort.
We booked a sea view room via TUI - there are many grades of rooms and this was the minimum we could book with a sea view. The room on the third floor had a fabulous view and balcony. The room was quite small, but had a huge very comfortable bed; the bathroom was also quite small but with a great shower. Everything was spotlessly clean and very comfortable and provided absolutely everything we needed (even down to an umbrella on a rainy day!) We booked on b&b, breakfast was fine, everything you would expect, but not especially memorable. We did lunch by the pool a few times, again ok but not special. The pool area is great, always plenty of beds and umbrellas, fresh towels, waiter service…everything you could want. Location is also great, shops, bars, restaurants all within minutes walk. The biggest asset of the hotel has to be their staff. From the minute we walked in to the time we left, everyone we met was friendly, helpful and went out of their way to ensure the guests were happy. Most impressive.
Fantastic Staff especially after we tested positive
The hotel is in a fantastic location and is Mallorca 5 star standard (about a 4 star English hotel). We read lots of negative reviews and because we are fussy about food, decided to do B&B not all inclusive so cannot comment on that. The hotel staff were always friendly and helpful, our swim up room was perfect and we had a wonderful stay. Then disaster stuck. The day before we were due to fly, my wife and I tested positive for COVID. As we are double vaccinated, we hadn’t tested before leaving the UK, and my wife had a light cough, so looking back we are sure we were infected in the UK. We sent our grown up kids home and the hotel were so supportive, they put us in another room that was easier to isolate and we started 10 days of quarantine. We could order food from the restaurants and the staff even went shopping for us. They checked on us every day over the phone and made the whole experience bearable. Luckily we tested negative after 5 days and came home. I think all the negative comments are exaggerated, no problem getting a sunbed here and the food was good, breakfast buffet lovely and all Staff absolutely excellent. Love it and would return in a heartbeat!
My wife and I originally booked our honeymoon stay at Secrets Villamil for July 2020 over two years ago. Unfortunately, the pandemic forced us to reschedule our stay a couple times and we ultimately booked August 2021 in the presidential suite with the all-inclusive package. On arrival to the hotel, we were immediately offered a drink and tried checking in and came upon a huge issue: our reservation was not in their records and the presidential suite had been booked for the entirety of our trip. It was a bad start to our honeymoon to say the least, having to deal with multiple different staff members to try resolving the issue after acknowledging the error by their reservations group. Though there were several discussions over the course of a few days with the general manager, Luis, the staff did everything possible to ensure we still had a great and memorable time. Outside of this issue, the hotel and the services available left us missing Majorca the moment we left. The bali beds, poolside service, room service, nightly entertainment, and especially the proximity to the beach made this trip unforgettable. There are a few people in particular that truly made this overall experience and I want to highlight and thank them in particular: Luis - Luis handled the issue at hand with class and expertise. He took the time out to personally handle our situation and ensure we had a great time throughout our trip. Jesús - Jesús was the best. His work at the Olio stood out to my wife and I; we are very grateful for all that he did every single day. He was also more than just a great worker, he was a very genuine person and a happy face as you walked towards the pool deck every day. Anton + Monika - Both of these staff members ensured all the little things about our stay went well that made the overall experience so memorable. Anton helped us book our nights at the restaurant and was an overall helpful staff member for our many questions. Monika was also very helpful on the weekly boat trip (which Anton also attended) and setting up and preparing our romantic dinner our final night. I know I speak for my wife and I when I say thank you to the Secrets staff for rectifying an issue that almost turned our honeymoon into a disaster. We really appreciate everything and look forward to the next time we stay at a Secrets resort and in Majorca.
